View Larger Map Jersey City cops pursue 4 men in Jeep across bridge to Kearny before their arrests on slew of charges, including weapons possession and having stolen vehicle Wednesday, January 05, 2011 By SUMMER DAWN HORTILLOSA JOURNAL STAFF WRITER Four Newark men who led Jersey City police on a wild car chase Monday night were eventually arrested in Kearny and charged with resisting arrest and unlawful possession of weapons, police said. Shortly after 11 p.m., officers in an unmarked police car spotted a Jeep Cherokee slowly moving along Communipaw Avenue near Route 440 with its headlights off, reports said. When the driver of Jeep - Pierre Macken, 23 - spotted police, he accelerated east on Communipaw Avenue and turned into a Hyundai car lot, reports said. When the police pulled up behind the Jeep, the vehicle shot off heading west on Roosevelt Avenue, and then made two right turns and wound up back on Communipaw Avenue heading west over the Shawn Carson and Robert Nguyen Bridge, reports said. When the car reached the apex of the bridge, it sideswiped a car and careened into the center divider, reports said. The impact of the crash caused one of the Jeep's wheels to detach, reports said. The car crossed the bridge and led police down Hackensack Avenue in Kearny before stopping suddenly and causing the unmarked police car to rear-end it, reports said. The four men in the Jeep took off on foot through the New Penn Trucking Company's tractor-trailer lot with the cops right behind them, according to reports. Officers arrested Macken, who attempted to dive under a parked trailer but slammed his head against a steel beam supporting the vehicle underneath, reports said. Lawrence Green, 18, was found hiding behind a building in the area by officers and Police K-9 Froto, reports said. Police also found Baseem Williams, 18, hiding under a trailer, and the fourth suspect, Najee Phillips, 19, surrendered to the police shortly after midnight, reports said. Police said they found a black paint ball gun, covered by a red rag, under the Jeep's passenger seat. Two policemen suffered minor injuries but refused medical attention. The men were charged with eluding officers, resisting arrest, aggravated assault of a police officer, unlawful possession of weapons and receiving stolen property (the Jeep), reports said.
