Besides teaching the dumb suburbanites about how to store their trash -- we also need to teach the deer and bears how to protect themselves. Please Help Stop the 2010 NJ Bear Hunt -- http://www.savenjbears.com

Deer seen roaming along Jersey City's Route 440 on Sunday was not seen yesterday; may have wandered back out of civilization Tuesday, November 16, 2010 Maybe she'll visit a GM dealership next. The deer that was spotted roaming Sunday between the Honda dealership and the Jersey City Department of Public Works complex on Route 440 has apparently moved on to greener pastures, city officials said yesterday. "The DPW workers were on site today and they didn't report seeing the deer," city spokesman Stan H. Eason said yesterday. State animal control workers, equipped with tranquilizer guns for use on larger animals, were scheduled to come to the city yesterday. But with the animal out of sight, the trip was called off. "In order to send out our animal control officers to help relocate the deer, it would have to found again, which can be very difficult," said Larry Ragonese, a spokesman with the state Department of Environmental Protection. "We just don't have the personnel to chase down a deer." In December last year, a wayward deer spotted in Downtown Jersey City jumped into the Hudson River near Exchange Place and made its way to Governors Island in New York Harbor. "The DEP rarely receives calls about deer sightings in Hudson County, but deer do thrive near the Meadowlands area. The deer usually find their own way out of civilization and get back home," Ragonese said. ASHLEY STRAIN

Deer settles in at Honda dealership and city garage in Jersey City

Sunday, November 14, 2010, 7:44 PM
Ken Thorbourne/The Jersey Journal

A deer with an apparent interest in foreign cars and garbage trucks is roaming between the Honda dealership on Route 440 in Jersey City and the city's Department of Public Works complex, officials said tonight.

The deer was first spotted shortly after midnight Saturday on the center median of Route 440 near Culver Avenue.
Motorists at first thought the animal, which was apparently completely still, was some kind of holiday decoration, but then it moved, city spokesman Stan H. Eason said tonight.

The deer made its way from the island in the roadway to the Honda dealership, then to the DPW lot, and it's been going back and forth between the two places, Eason said.

State animal control workers who are equipped with the tranquilizer guns for large animals have been notified and are expected to reach the site today , Eason said.
