Two cousins arrested on slew of charges after stolen car pursued from Hoboken into Jersey City Heights, the car crashes on Congress Street, and a foot chase ensues
Thursday, November 11, 2010 By MARK MAURER and MICHAELANGELO CONTE JOURNAL STAFF WRITERS Around 2 a.m., police observed a 1993 Saturn make a left turn at Second and Jackson streets without stopping at the sign, reports said. Cops said they followed the car, which then ran a red light. When police engaged the lights and sirens on Paterson Plank Road, the fleeing car crashed into a wall, then swerved and crashed into the outer gate of 2 Congress St., within Jersey City limits, police said. The suspects, later identified as Juan Jimenez, 33, of Central Avenue, and his cousin, Javier Jimenez, 31, of Elizabeth, got out of the car and ran west on Congress Street, according to police. Hoboken police called for assistance from Jersey City Police Officer Louis Mecka and police dog Froto. Juan Jimenez turned himself in when he heard Froto was on the way, Jersey City police said, but Javier Jimenez ran down Ogden Avenue and was out of sight, reports said, adding that Froto sniffed the Saturn and then took off heading south down Odgen with several officers as backup. Froto turned east onto a driveway and ran back to the cliffs where he headed north to a fence and began pointing, the hair on his back stood up and he refused to leave even though the officers couldn't spot the suspect, reports said. On the other side of the fence was a 30-foot drop and an officer shined a light on Javier Jimenez, who was hiding at the bottom, reports said. The Saturn the men were driving was registered to a Belleville woman, who told police she parked her car in Jersey City and had planned to report it stolen, police said. Juan Jimenez had outstanding warrants for $500 in Jersey City and $99 in Union City and possessed two glass cylinders, according to police. Javier Jimenez had an outstanding warrant for robbery in Hoboken, police said.
