From the New York Times 1909

"The electric car depopulated the canine population of Jersey City by one fox terrier. The fatality occurred on the Jersey City Heights, when the dog after yelping madly at the little car for a block, jumped right in front of it as though to stop its progress. A front wheel glided easily over the dog and it did not rise to bark again."

==================================

I must say that this wasn't the cute Ken Burns doc narrated by Tom Hanks..."Horatio's Drive"

Maybe "Babcock's Drive" would have been better remembered if he had taken the fox terrier with him!

A Babcock electric vehicle set a mind-blowing record for its time. In October of 1906 the New York Times reported one driven by F.A. Babcock Jr. traveled 100 miles on a single charge. It averaged about 14-18 mph for the journey between Jersey City and Philadelphia. Only stock batteries were used. The previous record was 40 miles.

The 1909 New York Times article does say that the electric car did kill a dog on it's 100 mile journey.
