what type of biz are you considering? If you are thinking of a restaurant, I'd recommend trying to find a location that is already zoned for a restaurant use. trying to get permits in this city is difficult, so if you can alleviate the hassle of having to go through another hurdle, it will only benefit you.

I am not exactly sure but NJCU and HCC both have programs or intiatives to help small businesses. Also, check with the local business/commerce department. It is worth a shot. Good Luck!

hello
my wife and i are thinking of opening a small business in the downtown area. havent quite decided what the business would be (mostly probably service oriented like a retail shop or restaurant), but wondering about what it takes to get a small business started in JC. - While very familiar with the condo/house sales or rental markets, dont know anything about the commercial rental market. so, what are the rental rates, lease terms, etc generally like? in the downtown area around newark ave? - any suggestions on local resources to tap into - someone to talk to get an idea on what it takes to get started, what to watch out for, tax breaks if any, etc etc. also, if there are any small business owners on this forum that would like to share their experiences - i will buy drinks. so let me know... thanks in advance newtoHP
