I also purchased in '97. It was a small 2-family by St. Peter's College that needed some TLC (it also smelled very strongly of curry). I think I paid about $85k for the place, which would be around $125k in today's money. My rental unit completely covered my principal and interest payment.
I miss that house sometimes. My apartment was tiny, but the house was so easy to take care of. Quote:

Have you read Outliers? One section is about that timing is everything, had Gates and Jobs been born a decade earlier or later it's unlikely they would have been giants in tech. My wife and I were lucky to be a decade or so older than you, so we could buy in 97, which turned out to be exact bottom of that market cycle in real dollars. Like Gates, Perot, and many other "moguls", all you need is to get real lucky once, and then not screw it up. We did kinda screw up not being more aggressive looking for our 2nd in 99-01, there was no clue the market would suddenly rocket. There's a brick 4 family on 4th that kills me every time I drive past it, asking $325k and we lowballed it!

I regret not buying a property downtown in 1994. I tried, but being right out of college I couldn't get a loan.

Why is there a long sound where Brooklyn Heights should be? If that's supposed to be the Narrows it's in the wrong direction on map that seems accurately detailed in other respects. Did they have fisheye lenses in 1869? Note the way the E river past Hell's gate seems to continue north parallel to the Hudson rather than heading east to LI sound. Weird. The charts of such an important waterway had long been quite accurate at that time.
