I will have to try this during the Spring. Is it big enough for a long-john cargo bike?

They could build a path next to the Newark PATH line between Harrison and Journal Square. The Bridge over the Hackensack can be retrofitted to include a side bike path or one on the Bridge itself.

It is still in a state of disarray. A fellow bike commuter from the Heights told me this while chatting inside Jersey Cycles. During the ribbon cutting at the Lincoln Park entrance for the opening of the Greenway path the ECG committee stated if the county/city did not maintain the path they would pull the path off the East Coast Greenway map.

Dunno, though I'll be checking on it personally very soon. Seems like this time of year, there can be some trash and winter debris on it, but the weeds aren't too bad because the warm growing season just started. If you ride it first, I'd love to know what you encounter. So, has anyone else here biked or walked to Newark over these Truck 1 & 9 bridges lately? What did you see?

Boom, it's been cleaned, weeded, swept, all across the two bridges from Lincoln Park in JC to Doremus Ave. in Newark.
See a few photos on the Bike JC Facebook page. Once you get over the second bridge, that little path at ground level, under the Pulaski to Raymond, is still very overgrown right where you'd enter it, though most of it is reasonably clear. I just rode in the road there anyway. Went down the ramp onto Doremus south but immediately hung a U-turn onto the northbound ramp, which took me to Raymond.

Hey, thx so much elsquid, how did you pull that off! Great job, hopefully this area will get cleaned up finally. This isa sad welcome to Jersey City as well as a waste of this path that got funded & forgotten about.

I showed a TV reporter these trails today; she (and possibly I) will be on the air tonight at 6, 7:30 and 11 talking about weeds and sand and garbage ...
From the Bike JC Facebook page: Intrepid NJTV reporter Christie Duffy braved the weedy wilds of the Truck 1&9 bike path from Jersey City to Newark today, with a Bike JC escort, for her report on how this valuable link between the state's two largest cities has become overgrown with weeds and strewn with garbage, sand and rocks. Watch her segment tonight at 6, 7:30 and 11. Comcast Channel 23, or in HD on Ch. 261 or 800. FiOS 23 & 523. Dish 58 & 8113. Over-the-air Ch. 50. We might even say a few words. So here's the deal guys. I commute on this path every chance I get. It's not so bad once you get used to it. My biggest fear is ticks.
All of you who are clamoring for it to be cleaned up have to realize that they do clean it up. I'd say about three or four times a year, the path is superb, but within five or so days, it's already completely overgrown again. The solution isn't weed whackers unfortunately. Those plants just need to be poisoned so that they never grow again. As for that sidewalk under the overpass once you get to Newark... that's another tricky matter as the problem there is just all the trash that people toss out their window. That's going to need a regular cleaning. I think I've seen it cleaned once in the four years I've been riding this path. I usually just avoid that sidewalk.

great work bringing attention this this!
I agree, there can and in the past has been community help in cleaning up. can do again, but would need some "official" help getting supplies/equipment out there, since it sounds like most of us bike there - http://www.nj.com/hudson/index.ssf/20 ... _litter.html#incart_river Quote:

Hey guys, I've been speaking to the Jersey Journal about this problem. If anyone would like to address your concern about this to him, please contact Jonathan Lin at jlin@jjournal.com or 201-273-4726 . Seems like everyone in trying to reach out to, to get this cleaned claims no responsibility.
Thx guys!

Who's bitching about it? I've been making phone calls to the city & the county & the state. Yea nothing has been done yet, maybe I'll call the Jersey Journal since they published the ad when this great walkway / bikeway was created.

I'm only a runner, but I'd help out. Maybe I'll bring a machete on my next run and clear some brush (or maybe running by the jail with a machete is not wise...)
Seriously, one issue might be that the county is nominally in charge of maintaining the greenway segment, but in reality it's a sidewalk along a state highway - so the state actually owns the property. Where there's a gap, things will fall through it.

I'd rather do something about it myself than wait for something that will never happen and bitch about it on a message board. There are quite a few people participating in the conversation here - if half are willing, we could give it a shot. Not something you could do in a day (or two or three) but every bit would help. If you are interested, post here or message me.

This is definitely not a volunteer project for any of us to to, the county or state is responsible! I agree with whoever said to get the inmates to do this, but how do u get the county to make this happen. It's a mess and not a nice way to greet people coming to Jersey City across this bridge.

I don't think the East Coast Greenway would have chosen that route if there were other options available. The Greenway is a very long term work in progress. I rode it from Cranford to New Brunswick yesterday - some beautiful stretches through parks and even a 2-mile off road rail to trail section in Middlesex that was perfect, but there were also sections that were on major roads/highways equivalent to riding on 440. Those were designated "interim" Greenway. Governmentally, NJ's interest in cycling has lagged behind other states and the congestion here makes it tough - but the Greenway is a great step in the right direction.

I'd be happy to participate in a cleanup if others are willing to join. That stretch doesn't seem likely to be a high priority for attention from the city, county or state. I've run and biked through there a few times and it could definitely be better.

I'm hoping we can get both sides cleaned up. I ride the South (eastbound) side of the highway?path to go across. To me it's easier than going to the other side of the highway to cross.
I'll make another call later to the Mayor Action Hot line & see if I can get the number to call the state or the county on this again.

The dude is a little crazy, experienced, and good at changing flat tires. This is not for newbies.
But if you can do it, do it! It's one of the only ways to bike out of JC over the rivers, and if more of us do it there will be more pressure to improve it.

So I ran this "trail" this morning after reading this thread. The ECG from Lincoln Park (you do have to look for the entrance), at least as far as Kearny, is really nothing more than the sidewalk along 1&9 Truck, which was already there. I can imagine how this was pitched to the county "you get a great photo opp, with ribbon cutting and everything, and you'll have to spend $$Zero to maintain it." At any rate, it's not impassable (for runners).
It's overgrown with weeds on both sides until you get to the Hackensack bridge, but it wouldn't take more than a day with a small crew, weedwackers and trash bags to fix it up. I didn't get any farther than Talbot Hall (aka the Hudson County slammer) so I can't speak to the Passaic side. Wonder if we could get a crew of nice inmates from the jail to get on a work detail and clean it up? The view from the top of the bridge as the sun rose over JC and Manhattan was pretty nice. Made up for most of the bother.

I have done this route several times. It is REALLY poor. I have to agree with others here: it is shameful this is advertised as part of the ECG. I have done it riding on the road (with traffic) and I have done the sidewalk thing. Riding on the road, alongside vehicular traffic, is a bit harrowing (lots of speeders, and the bridge surfaces are not to be trifled with) but it is the "easiest" way to get between Newark and JC on a bike. Riding on the sidewalk is a royal pain in the ass. Lots of trash, dust, sand, etc, plus the overgrown vegetation on the side of the road. Sometimes it is easier to dismount and walk the damn bike. The route described by elsquid is crazy. The route, not the dude himself! Hackensack Ave to 2nd St to Central Ave to back on the 1/9??? Crazy. Then Doremus?? Doremus is such a poorly maintained road. And, full of speed bumps and heavy truck traffic. I wouldn't recommend anyone go on that road on a bicycle unless you are very experienced, and know (and can) fix a tire on your own.

My whole 1&9 Truck route, in both directions, was on the north (westbound) side of the highway and the two bridges. I went through the whole in the fence and over the Hack bridge, then I turned right on Hackensack Avenue and basically went around the big block, making a left on 2nd St. and a left on Central Ave., then I cut through the Tullo Truck Stop lot to get back on the sidewalk just as it began rising to approach the Passaic bridge northern catwalk. (This approach was the part with the most sand, rocks and occasional garbage.) On the other side of the Passaic bridge, I rode down the ramp and then headed south on Doremus. Then Roanoake, Foundry, P, Roanoake, Hawkins(?) Rome, then wandered northwest through the Ironbound. Apparently, once you get off the Passaic bridge, there is now also a bike path that skirts north around the road ramps under the Skyway and spits you out onto Raymond west of the interchange, but I didn't want to mess with Raymond. There's a whole thread on Bike Forum about this general route here, with my account on the second-to-latest page by now, I think: Thread on Bike Forum

My sense is that this route is used mostly by people who ride to their jobs at the warehouses and other businesses in that part of Kearny, and occasionally by long-haul touring riders.
If a little more work were done to keep it debris-free, it would be more attractive to adventurous recreational cyclists (not just hard-core nut-jobs, like me and some others here) heading to all kinds of places, like the D&R Canal, or the shore... even Newark.
