Hey:
Thanks for the comments so far (even the one about the New Yorker). In talking to people in JC about JC, two concerns keep coming up: a) rapid, unchecked development and b) crime. But these are paradoxical, no? I.e., if the crime is really that bad, it should keep the development (and influx) in check; or the influx will curb the crime (neighborhoods get nicer, etc.). Or maybe I just haven't been talking to the right people....

As fasteddie pointed out, you will get many wiseass replies to your missive, in my opinion mostly because for lots of JC folk, we are wary of the press since it seems like "out of town" media likes to bash us.
Oh, you should also run a search for "white people giving out directions", that is one of the nice perks of living here. As for me, I moved to JC in March, from Lyndhurst, and couldn't be happier- great commute and I live in a safe, quiet (for now) neighborhood, with a reasonable rent. I won't say what neighborhood I live in because, as jenny stated, I don't want 12,000 Billyburg bohemian trustafarian "artists" moving in next door and driving up my rent.

My point with alerting the press was that at the time (a couple months ago), there seemed to be a burst in random crimes in the downtown area, some minor (bike stealing by freaky junkies on Wayne) and some far worse. Whether that is up or down from the previous year was irrelevant to me at the time and is kind of irrelevant to me now. It's happening and it's crappy, no matter what the stats say. But yes, overall it's down (except rape), and we should be clear about that. Let's hope for even better numbers next year. Now I will stop because we have visitors (Mr. NY Mag) and I don't want to look like the loudmouth family member at the Thanksgiving dinner...

Mr. Sternbergh, as you can see from the few responses so far, Downtown Jersey City is inhabited by a population of exiled smartasses who have all been kicked out of Manhatten, Brooklyn, Hoboken etc. I don't live downtown so I am not one of THEM. Your first mistake was to mention that you are writing an article and especially for a NY publication. You really should have lied and said that you are considering moving here and asking for advice. The regular posters would be climbing over each other to offer sincere and useful information on every facet of everyday life in the area. Happens at least once a week here. Too late now, your cover is blown. You will get nothing but smartass sarcasm now. Best bet is to go back through the forum archives. You will find enough material to write a series of books. Note: pay special attention to threads that discuss "pimp", "Wanda", "boobies", "wheelchair clown". These will be the most informative.

My gripe is that Journal Square is the bastard child of Downtown JC which is the bastard child of Hoboken which is the bastard child of NY.
WE HAVE THE LOEW'S DAMNIT!  Although its funny when people from the South move to podunk Brooklyn and discover JC for the first time.

Cool area but oh that crime rate -- armed robberies, push-ins, and burglaries happen all the time.
We also need some decent places to eat and hear music and some life on Newark Street after dark would be nice.

jenny- not sure where your "rising crime" theory is coming from- the stats this year say that everything (other than rape) is down compared to the same 9 month period last year.
to the writer- i love JC. I now have a 15 minute commute to lower Manahattan, which means a lot to a person who can wind up working some crazy hours.
