Haggis, there's no drawing requirement for electrical work, I've had permits for entire new service and rewiring of units with no drawings. Perhaps a gut or new construction requires it, never done that.

If you go to the Buildings Dept (30 Montgomery), you will see all the various permits in bins on the wall. I would guess that you would have to have it inspected afterwards as well. I just had an inspection from the city and it cost me $200.

Before starting anything, make sure you have 2 sets of architectural drawings, stamped by a licensed NJ architect, and take both sets with you to the building department which they will keep.
Make sure you have an additional copy where the construction is happening.
You will most likely have a fire inspection.
Read this over carefully, the JC Building department is fickle.

This really should be a question for your contractor, but around here they ask "you want to get a permit?" like they're asking "you want fries with that?"

You need an electrical permit, but not a plumbing or gas if you're not moving them. Cabinets do not need a permit if you're simply replacing them, but do need one if you're hanging them in a new location. Cost depends on how well you lie about what you're paying your contractor. We're talking in the hundreds, not thousands, I don't recall the %.

Can anyone guide me on what permits are needed for kitchen renovation? We are not moving any plumbing or gas but are doing a fair bit of electrical work. What do permits typically cost and do we need a permit for plumbing, electrical and cabinets? Any leads would be helpful.
