I actually agree with that idea.

The problem is once they decide to fund something, the city only has a few ways to pick your pocket. Would a fractional increase in the sales tax be better? Some kind of utility surcharge?

Its hilarious how Boggiano thinks this new open space trust fund would detract from or prevent other city effort/programs. Also, more/better open space helps youth stay active and is one of the many prongs to making cities safer/less crime ridden... what a crock.

He says, "This is another political gimmick," he said. "Forget about all this ideal stuff, let's take care of the problems we have now."

good proposal, timing is off, get the property tax reval done first. also, should and county includes historic preservation in this type of tax.

I would agree that the timing is not optimal, particularly given that the reval has not yet been completed and therefore residents are being asked to vote on a new tax that could compound a liability that could balloon for some.

JERSEY CITY -- Mayor Steve Fulop today proposed a Jersey City open trust fund that he said would provide $1.2 million annually to preserve park space in New Jersey's second largest city.

Standing inside Berry Lane Park, Fulop said the proposed fund, which would be paid for by a new tax up for approval by voters in November, would represent an ongoing commitment to rebuild and replenish city parks for decades into the future.
