are there any new frame shops to give Gallerie Hudson and Grove Pointe Frame some friendly competition?

has anyone used the frame service located inside Mana Contemporary?

I've got a full-sized vintage lobby poster that needs to be mounted (or canvas-backed), and framed behind preservation glass.

it'll be a rather spendy project, so I'd like it done as beautifully and economically as possible.

Michael's on 6th and 22nd has various poster size frames and you could drop it in one of them and would save a ton on making a custom frame.

yup, thanks.

looking for custom framing, though.

just heard that Big Drum will be closing this summer. a big loss to the community.

they're offering big discounts on inventory, so if you've been putting off some framing projects, get on them now.

Definitely a loss. I wonder if they were affected by the out-of-the-way location as well as the constant chaos of the construction zones all around it. Thanks for the heads up.

The email I received from Big Drum mentioned that they cannot renew their lease. From that, I would guess that either the rent got jacked up too high or the landlord wants them out in order to do something else with the space.

The email also mentioned a clearance sale on all framed art and stock frames. FYI.

I've had a number of paintings and prints framed by Big Drum when they were located in the Newport Mall. I'm quite pleased with their work.

I also can recommend Big Drum - they have a good eye for frames that complement the artwork, I've gotten everything from paintings to $3.00 silkscreen prints framed there, and my apartment looks like a serious collectors!

For future reference, you can order nice frames and mattes cheaply online from Blick (they have a few stores in Manhattan). I framed a still-life I did in college (the painting frames are sized for standard pre-made canvases) http://www.dickblick.com/categories/framing/

Just had quite a few pictures done by Big Drum and they were excellent. Friends who knew both places recommended Big Drum.

At Gallerie Hudson I always got good recommendations regarding matching the frame with the artwork, and Ernie did a great job framing.

I've had lots of work done at Gallerie Hudson. The artistic suggestions are always good and the execution is excellent. Cannot make any comparisons to other services. Always happy with GH.

I've used both Big Drum and Gallerie Hudson (that's the place at the corner of Newark and Jersey, yes? I never can remember the name, for some reason).

Have had great service / quality at both, with comparable prices.

I tend to use Big Drum more often because of their sales (get on their mailing list).

Nope. I've gotten a couple of things framed at Big Drum Art in the Powerhouse area. They did a very nice job with each item and I thought the price was quite reasonable (around $100 to frame my college degree with 2 mattings, and around $200 to frame a really large old lithograph with all of the protective treatments, etc.). They send you a coupon when you join their mailing list.

Any experience with Gallerie Hudson vs. Grove Pointe Frame? Quality and price, in particular.
