Jersey City envisions arts district near historic Loew's

By Terrence T. McDonald | The Jersey Journal
on October 25, 2016 at 12:19 PM

JERSEY CITY ? The neighborhood behind the Landmark Loew's Jersey Theatre in Journal Square would be set for a radical transformation under zoning changes up for final adoption by the City Council tomorrow.

The changes would allow the Harwood family to construct residential high-rises and arts facilities on a roughly 2-acre area the family owns that runs along the PATH tracks. The area is now home now to parking lots and a garage.

The city hopes the changes will lead to the creation of a cultural arts district connecting the neighborhood west of the Loew's to Journal Square. The Harwoods would be allowed to build taller high-rises than zoning allows in exchange for creating spaces for theaters, art galleries and studios, museums, libraries and more.

Resized Image

By Ron Zeitlinger | The Jersey Journal
on October 06, 2016 at 8:57 AM, updated October 06, 2016 at 8:58 AM

A new Journal Square community group has been formed and it will hold its first general meeting at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 8, at the Old Bergen Church, 1 Highland Ave.

New JSQ Community Association's slogan is "clean, green and safe" and the group said clean streets, sidewalks and alleys, beautification such as more flowers and murals, an environmentally friendly neighborhood, and a sharp reduction in crime are its top priorities.

There will be a sidewalk. Developers can't get rid of those. The rendering shows no setback from the sidewalk.

Plan pits developer against neighborhood in Journal Square

By Terrence T. McDonald | The Jersey Journal
on October 04, 2016 at 2:58 PM, updated October 04, 2016 at 3:22 PM

JERSEY CITY ? The developer of a six-story, 54-unit building proposed for a dead-end street near Journal Square is expected to receive a hostile reception from residents at tonight's Planning Board meeting.

The 64-foot-high building would replace three single-family homes on Journal Square's Perrine Avenue, which runs about 300 feet and is home to 16 houses. Nick Babalis, who is behind the project, needs the board's approval to have zero space between the front of the building and the sidewalk.

I noticed a vacant store front a year or so ago in handsome brick building at Liberty and St Paul's. Not sure what had been there previously (there used to be a bar around there that closed about 15 years ago but I think was another spot) with a nice big window and corner location it felt like something should be there. I noticed some work happening there this year and finally figured out what is happening - some type of eatery:

Plans for 3 major new Journal Square towers move forward

By Terrence T. McDonald | The Jersey Journal
on August 17, 2016 at 9:48 AM, updated August 17, 2016 at 12:23 PM

JERSEY CITY ? Donald Trump's son-in-law is about to put his stamp on Journal Square.

Jared Kushner and KABR Group are proceeding with plans to build three residential towers on two lots near the Journal Square PATH hub, towers that will include a total of 2,466 luxury residential units, 103,784 square feet of retail space and 224,539 square feet of offices.

The plans, given unanimous approval by the Planning Board last night, include a radical transformation of the old headquarters of The Jersey Journal into an open-air retail market and public plaza fronting a 72-story tower.

Chris Langston, chair of the planning board, hailed both projects, calling the one for 30 Journal Square ? the old home of The Jersey Journal ? "absolutely brilliant.

agreed. what a colossal waste of money if we are just talking about 200 feet. wouldn't it be cheaper to build an enclosed walkway with moving walkways to jsq?

Plan would bring nearly 500 units to old Puccini's site in Jersey City
By Terrence T. McDonald | The Jersey Journal

on July 29, 2016 at 3:05 PM

JERSEY CITY ? A new artist's rendering shows how the site of a former industrial plant and iconic Jersey City eatery will be remade into a nearly 500-unit residential development a half-mile from the Journal Square PATH hub.

Avenir, located at Broadway and West Side Avenue, would include 486 units of market-rate residential housing and over 25,000 square feet of retail space in five buildings ranging from three to eight stories, plus 384 parking spaces. The planning board gave final approval to some of the site last week.

The development will be located on a four-acre site in the city's Marion section that once included Puccini's Restaurant, a West Side mainstay and political hangout for 31 years before closing last year to make way for Avenir.

I found the menu scant and the curry kind of watery, but it wasn't the worst I've had. I'll try something else next time. It's always packed when I walk by, so it's definitely popular.

I went to the JSQ location with my wife shortly after they opened. They had some kinks to work out on service, but food was decent and inexpensive.

Port Authority OKs deal bringing Starbucks to Journal Square PATH station

By Terrence T. McDonald | The Jersey Journal
on June 30, 2016 at 6:43 PM

JERSEY CITY ? If you take the PATH from Journal Square and need a place to get your morning upside down triple grande extra vanilla caramel macchiato with two Splendas, you're in luck.

A deal that will bring Starbucks to the Journal Square transportation hub was approved today by Port Authority of New York and New Jersey commissioners, giving the gourmet coffee giant its first proper Jersey City location outside of the Downtown area.

The bi-state agency touted the move as part of its efforts to "reinvigorate" the PATH hub, citing the opening of restaurants PJ Ryan's Squared, which debuted in the transportation center in May, and Chickpea, which opened there last July.

The 2,079-square-foot Starbucks location will be adjacent to the PJ Ryan's, facing Kennedy Boulevard, and will include an outdoor seating area. It is expected to open around February 2017, soon after the first tower of the nearby Journal Squared development is scheduled to welcome its first residents.

Starbucks headed to Journal Square PATH station

By Terrence T. McDonald | The Jersey Journal
on June 24, 2016 at 2:40 PM, updated June 24, 2016 at 3:09 PM

JERSEY CITY ? Starbucks lovers may soon be able to get their Frapuccino fix at the Journal Square PATH station.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey is scheduled to finalize a lease with the gourmet coffee giant at the agency's commissioners meeting next week, a deal that would give Starbucks its first proper Jersey City location outside of the Downtown.

The move is another signal of the changes coming to the center of the city, which city officials for decades have attempted to revitalize. Five towers of luxury housing are planned for the lots surrounding the PATH hub, while another is slated for across the street, on the former site of The Jersey Journal's headquarters.

YES Journal Square should continue to get abatements. Gee long neglected Journal Square is finally getting some much needed love and now abatements for it are in question? What?s the score as of today Downtown 100 abatements and Journal Square around 5? Abatements made Downtown what it is today a great destination. Journal Square abatements will make Journal Square the Jewel of Jersey City once again. Keep em coming to the Square and to other sections of JC as Mayor Fulop said to attract developers to those other sections outside of DT)

25-year tax break for 40-unit building in Jersey City up for council OK

By Terrence T. McDonald | The Jersey Journal
on May 10, 2016 at 5:01 PM, updated May 10, 2016 at 5:02 PM

JERSEY CITY ? A 25-year tax break for a six-story, 40-unit residential building planned for just outside of Journal Square is up for final adoption by the City Council tomorrow.

The $11.5 million project, known as Journal Square Lofts, comes courtesy of developer Matt Weinreich, of Hopkins Group, which was also behind nearby Kennedy Lofts, on Newkirk Street. Journal Square Lofts will be inside an existing building at 2853-2857 Kennedy Boulevard, behind the Landmark Loew's Jersey Theatre.

I noticed on Saturday that the PJ Ryan's in JSQ was open - not sure if it was a soft opening but there were definitely a few people at the bar. Also, I noticed several tables of people at the new Noodle Fan yesterday.

The building next to the defunct pool, on Communipaw catty corner to Church's Chicken, has scaffolding up. What's up with that site?

Jersey City in talks to bring art museum to Journal Square

By Terrence T. McDonald | The Jersey Journal

Jersey City is eyeing a building adjacent to the Journal Square PATH station as a location for a new art museum.

The city is in preliminary talks with Hudson County officials to purchase the four-story building at 25 Journal Square, also known as Pathside and owned by Hudson County Community College. The plan is for an expanded version of the Jersey City Museum, which essentially shuttered in 2010.
