$1M bail for accused killer; family of stabbing victim says he was helping another victim

?The prosecutor said that when detectives went to arrest Lopez, he fled through a window and went down a fire escape. He also said Lopez is in the United States illegally, had changed his appearance after the incident and planned to change it further.?

I may be over-thinking this, but...

If you look out your window and see a gang member shot, presumably a gang from another area has come into 'your' gang's turf and attacked them, then they flee.

So the gangsters in the street outside are the local gang, who have just had one of their friends shot, so surely this gang are not going to care if you grass on their enemy gang.

Robin.
You are over thinking it, gangs can be complicated and aren't so cut and dry all the time. I never said the person killed was a gang member also but let's pretend they were. It isn't far fetched a rival could just be caught in the wrong area visiting a girl, family or friends.

My only point of making this scenario was to stop all the witness shaming for not coming forward. Im not trying to talk any one out of coming forward just showing that you shouldn't blame anyone if they choose not to. Maybe that is something politicians/police should work on. A way to encourage more witnesses to come forward and keep them safe while also working harder to build cases not so reliant on witnesses.

People also need to understand not every victim is a gang member or career criminal either. Most might be but it shouldn't be assumed in every case.

The cameras are in public spaces not your bedroom - I'm sure the other countries using them that the people there don't have 2 heads and a lower IQ!

Try google earth and even nearmap - nearmap gives an image every month and I can tell if you have an illegal extension to your home or a dog house in your yard!

Then we should do what they do in the UK, Australia and many European cities where they flood the area with CCTV.

We should also have CCTV fitted to every home and dash cams for every car. This will void the need for witnesses and the footage captured will act as true image of what took place.

Once it is delivered to the police and if a set time has transpired with no action, the video provider could then pass it onto the media!

There are technical checks that can be used to ensue no-one has tampered with the footage thus securing its authenticity - noting that even police are being questioned if they witness a crime !!
JC already has them on Ocean, MLK, Bergen, Central etc. It doesn't help criminals adapt.

Are you serious? I would be totally against that as would most voters if it was done to the degree your suggesting.

Also I don't know how long you been living in JC but the areas of the city that have high crime rates already have cctv in those neighborhoods. The criminals just adapted to them. Even some of the recent murders were close to areas filmed by cctv towers and those still aren't solved either.

Their are other solutions cctv isn't one of them.

By being proactive before these crimes are committed instead of reactive. Most of the violence is gang related think about you can count on one hand the number of gang sweeps that have occurred in this city one hand in 20 years but you don't have enough fingers for the amount of murders these gangs committed each year.

Also a more solid case needs to be built especially when it comes to murder. One that relies on witness testimony alone is a very weak case to begin with. That is like telling the public if you happen to be killed some where their are no witnesses even if people were not scared to come forward the killer would never be caught. Their is more to police work then filling out statements.

As for giving evidence, I'd be going to the police and not the other way around - I'd make my own way to the police station to make that statement, however what some people are neglecting to mention is that it isn't a random bystander being killed, but more often it's one gang member against another or a drug user trying to rip-off a seller (or visa versa) and thus no empathy is given to 'crooks' or 'drug addicts' being killed. Often the give away of this occurring is the time of day (middle of the night) and location, near parks, drug houses and where drug deals are carried out.
Even if you went to the police station and not one person saw you go in or come out with a detective to be questioned when they took you to the Duncan Ave Homicide Unit building (that is where you would be interviewed most likely) the suspect will still find out all your info from his lawyer. The defense will have access to all that information.

As for it usually being a gang member killed that isn't true. The man who got stabbed according to the articles out so far was a Uber driver trying to stop another man from being attacked that was already stabbed and was killed trying to help the victim. Another report of a shooting today was of a woman who's car was hit with a stray bullet while driving past a shooting. She could of easily been killed as well.

Also how is time of day an indicator when these shootings have been happening all times of the morning, day and night?

The police already know where the drug locations are and people are calling it in. Just listen to a scanner a few hours and you will realize more people are calling in crimes then you think.

Let's say you were looking out the window and saw someone being killed and called it in. As a crowd gathers everyone in your neighborhood sees the Homicide Unit come to your door and everyone knows your a witness now and where you live including any gang members that are around. This doesn't bother you so you continue to cooperate. You give all posible information and even an ID of the suspect. The suspect turns out to be a gang member and his gang has many members in your neighorhood. While he is locked up with a high bail he is inside letting all the other gang members know your his snitch and the only one keeping him locked up. He gets all the info he needs on who you are and where you live from his defense attorney.

The case is built on the day you testify since he got rid of the murder weapon before his arrest. So now the gang members have three to five years until the trial date to get to you and/or your family. To make matters worst even law abiding neighbors and friends will not associate themselves with you for fear of getting the same retaliation you may get so now your a target and also a loner. The gangs won't stop targeting you and any known family for attacks until you change your statement. So would you and your families lives or still go through with the trial because it is the right thing to do?

Keep in mind this isn't the movies you will not get witness protection for a street murder.

The community in some parts of JC need to take a hard look at themselves instead of expecting the police to wave a magic wand to fix the situation without anyone stepping up and providing evidence for that to happen!

A man was stabbed to death after a dispute on Monticello Avenue in Jersey City Saturday night, a source with knowledge of the incident said this morning. The fatality is the city's 23rd homicide of the year and its eighth homicide since Nov. 12.
