Jersey City man already facing life in prison is convicted for more sex offenses

JERSEY CITY -- A city man already facing life in prison for kidnapping and raping a Bayonne woman in August 2013 was convicted today of four counts of sexually assaulting another woman a month earlier.

"I'm very, very happy with the verdict," said a family member of the victim, who chose not to identify herself.

Sexual assault normally carries a possible sentence of five to 10 years in prison, but because Shawn Barrett, 47, has a long and violent record, the charge will carry a possible sentence of 10 to 20 years.

Why should taxpayers have to pay to house this guy for life? A bullet to the head and be done with him.
amen
I wouldn't worry too much. If he's as much of a violent troublemaker as he sounds like, he'll inevitably piss off a fellow inmate in prison and get stabbed in the shower or something. Not too mention the fact that people who have committed violent crimes against women (especially rape) aren't too high on the prison totem pole. Higher than pedophiles, perhaps, but their survival rates in prison aren't particularly high.
Hate to break it to you but the survival rates in NJ prisons are higher then on the streets when it comes to murder. Murders are rare in NJ jails and prisons. It is true however he will be targeted for regular beatings if he isn't in a prison where he is separated from the general population. But he is more likely to be beaten with a padlock in a sock and receive stitches then shanked in a shower and die. People watch these NatGeo documentaries on prison and don't realize every state is different. In NJ murders are rare, stabbings happen but are not as common as other states, rape happens but is also very rare. And you don't have to stick with your own race like other states. If you notice most of these documentaries are in the same few states with higher prison murder rates and heavy racism. Ever notice most of them are filmed in border states like California, New Mexico and Texas?

Judge sentences Jersey City rapist to life in prison

By Michaelangelo Conte | The Jersey Journal
March 04, 2016 at 8:15 AM

Two-time convicted rapist Shawn Barrett of Jersey City will die behind bars after being sentenced to life in prison with no chance of parole yesterday for kidnapping and raping a Bayonne woman in his Stevens Avenue home in 2013.

"The Hudson County Prosecutor's Office is thankful for the tireless work of the (Prosecutor's Office's) Special Victims Unit detectives and the Jersey City Police Department in apprehending this serial predator," said Hudson County Assistant Prosecutor Najma Rana, who prosecuted the 47-year-old.

In September, a jury convicted Barrett of the charges of kidnapping, aggravated sexual assault and sexual assault in the Aug. 20, 2013, incident involving the then 26-year-old victim, who escaped after stabbing Barrett multiple times.

I still use messengers, especially when I am working from home. There is no way to get samples of items to clients via fax or email.

JERSEY CITY -- A Hudson County employee faces life in prison after he was convicted in Hudson County Superior Court this afternoon of kidnapping and raping a Bayonne woman in his Jersey City apartment in 2013.

The verdict against Shawn Barrett, 47, of Jersey City, came four days into deliberations of his second trial on the charges. He was also convicted of criminal restraint and making terroristic threats.

At his first trial, Barrett was convicted of simple assault, but the jury in that trial could not reach verdicts on the more serious charges.

Anthony J. Machcinski/The Jersey Journal

A 45-year-old Hudson County employee has been arrested and charged in a sexual assault yesterday where the victim was able to break free and stab her
alleged attacker, authorities confirmed.

Shawn Barrett, 45, of Stevens Avenue in Jersey City, was charged with kidnapping, criminal restraint, aggravated sexual assault, aggravated assault and related weapons offenses, Hudson County Deputy First Assistant Prosecutor Debra Simon said.

The attack occurred yesterday at roughly 5 a.m. inside a three-story home on Stevens Avenue, Simon said.

Preliminary investigation by Jersey City police and the Hudson County prosecutors confirmed initial reports that during the struggle against Barrett, the victim was able to turn the knife being used against her on her attacker, stabbing him several times, Simon said.

Both the victim and Barrett were transported to the Jersey City Medical Center for treatment, where Barrett is in currently in the intensive-care unit recovering from multiple stab wounds to his back and chest, a JCMC spokesman said.

Barrett makes $25,275 as a messenger in the Hudson County's roads department since June of 2009, Hudson County spokesman Jim Kennelly said. Barrett was suspended without pay following the announcement of charges, Kennelly added.

Barrett's bail was set at $250,000 cash only, Simon said.
