This should be a fun thread; Maplewood/South Orange is exactly the demographic that Fulop would expect to have support from ('progressive' Democrats, the most LBGT centric town in NJ, very diverse population) but when it comes to school funding/taxes he may not get support.

Star-Ledger columnist puts spotlight on Fulop's property tax bill In his column today, Star-Ledger scribe Paul Mulshine highlights a Warren County Republican's complaint that Jersey City Mayor Steve Fulop is only paying $7,700 in property taxes a year on the $739,000 Jersey City Heights home the mayor recently purchased. "If that house was in my district, he would be paying $25,000 a year," fumes state Sen. Mike Doherty, by way of making his point that the state is over-subsidizing urban towns such as Newark and Jersey City, particularly when it comes to paying for schools. How did all the renovation work get done without the tax assessment getting adjusted? A year after I did renovation work, the tax assessors office jacked my taxes up.

My favorite part of the article was whiny Bob Somers: "it is a little creepy that Sen. Doherty would pry closely into the Mayor's personal life in order to grandstand."
That's rich. Fulop doesn't take a shit without trying to get coverage. You can't whine when you live your life like a realty show and people actually notice what you are up to.

The senator would flipped if he was at June 24th council meeting. The city amended the Powerhouse Arts District plan to give 30 years tax abatements for artists. The abatement applies to the entire project, not just artists, it is a way of Fulop getting around his 5 year Tier plan for the neighborhood.

Harry Moore was never mayor of Jersey City. He was a commissioner under Mayor Hague and was a US senator before becoming governor for the 3rd time in 1938. Wow, Fulop looks like he's the new target of negative press stories by Advance Media/njcom/Star Ledger; I guess the editorial board isn't too thrilled with him and need a new target. This could be a long couple of years for him.

A political trivia question: Who was the last mayor of Jersey City to be elected governor? It was A. Harry Moore, way back in 1938. Many have tried since. All have failed. The problem they faced is simply stated: What is good for Jersey City is not necessarily good for New Jersey. If you doubt that, consider the rowhouse that current Mayor Steven Fulop is purchasing. "This wonderful one family has left no detail undone. 3 decks with direct New York City views," says the online ad. "The interior features 4 bedrooms, 2 full baths, Viking stainless steel appliances, exposed brick and tin ceiling in the dining room ... " and so on. All of that is nice. But even nicer are the property taxes, a mere $7,700 per year. That's about 1 percent of the asking price of $739,000. This is a real bargain according to the guy who informed me of the deal. Story
