I would say that this is a perfect time to leverage our proximity to Manhattan. IT's clearly why most of us live in Jersey City, anyway. Having lived here for ten years, I too love JC. BUT having lived in the city for ten years prior, I can also acknowledge when there are short-comings. Good rye bread and good bagels are two of them! Orwasher's bakery on E. 78th St near First Ave has some of the best rye bread I've ever tasted. Not to slam any more local vendors........but if you were compelled enough to post a request on JCList regarding where to find good rye bread, then I say invest the time and energy in heading up to the UES and try ORwashers.......just one man's humble opinion.....

Also Murray's on Bleecker carries a bunch of Orwasher's breads, if you're like me and you try to avoid visiting the UES if at all possible.

try Choc-au-Pain. Pain au seigle is what it would be called. Also, some of the 'artisanal' brands like Vermont Baker or the packaged loaves from Denmark or Germany might hit the spot. Shoprite carries them.

I'm not crazy about their supermarket loaves, but you can get fresh rye at Pechter's in Harrison. And they keep great hours M-F 6AM-9PM, Sat-Sun 6AM-6:30PM. Great hamburger buns, Kaiser rolls, salt sticks, and when they have it I always get a chocolate babka.

It seems at though Raritan Bakery will no longer be bringing rye bread to the Grove Street farmers market, as "it's no longer profitable" for them.

Does anyone have suggestions on where to find a great loaf of rye bread in the area?

Thanks!
