President Obama came to this New Jersey city on Monday to "hold you up as a symbol of promise for the nation." "This city is on to something," Obama said in a speech before almost 300 people at the Salvation Army's Ray & Joan Kroc Corps Community Center, which offers programs for recreation, performing arts, early childhood and job training. Obama acknowledged the improvements in the crime rate, the increased number of police on the streets, and the relationships that the officers are building with community residents. Still, "no one is suggesting that the job is done," the president said. "It's still a work in progress." The president's appearance comes at a time when several unarmed black men have been killed at the hands of police in communities across the U.S. Story
