I was quoted by a friend who has a tax preparer that accepts 160 dollars for personal taxes. I called a reputable BBB accredited highly rated tax preparer (located in JC) who quoted me 400 to 450 dollars.

Our taxes involve 1040, Schedule B, C, D, 8829 and 8849 as well as NJ and NY filings. I have done all the work and completed all the forms, but I owe more than I expected and maybe I messed up somewhere.

What should I pay.

Did you use software like Turbotax or do it by hand? If the latter, get the former. cheaper than an accountant for all those forms and you've already done most of the work.
