They city hall is counting on apathy by the residents. That works for them, low turn out, nothing changes.

Insurance business is a good way to curry favor with Mr. Norcross. Nothing is going to change.

Dan, Dan, insurance brokerage fees are huge, follow the money, these brokers will find a way to channel campaign funds to the mayor and friendly council members. That is the way its done. Steven Fulop has mastered the art of old time Jersey City politics. You may recall this recent oldie but goodie that lead to the arrest of Joe Bigica.
"In September 2010, the Jersey City Council voted unanimously to award a three-year brokerage contract to Frenkel & Co., a New York-based firm that has a consulting arrangement with Bigica. Frenkel officials said they pay Bigica ?producer? fees for originating the contract, but said they could not immediately specify how much he was being paid." http://www.northjersey.com/news/fbi-p ... usiness-dealings-1.367093

there is too much recurring cost savings for the city not to get on board. they locked in a 3 year contract, now they will adopt best priced insurance and look like heroes ... not.

More under qualified employees on payroll and higher taxes is probably right.

Just for the record, information like payroll are subject to OPRA requests. I suggest those with snarky remarks do an OPERA request for this year and 2013 and you can do the Math yourself.

Commissions can be subject to a cap. There is no reason not to have the best of both worlds.

I'm curious, where did you study economics? My rudimentary knowledge has taught me you must invest to see longterm, sustained growth, but as you and your fellow right-winger Fletch so eloquently have pushed, nothing short of cuts cuts cuts will suffice. If your economic policies are so sound, why not run for Council again? That would be AMAZING!!!

This sounds nice. So what are the commissions the city pays now? How do we know a flat fee would have been cheaper? Did the 3-year deal allow for a lower commission? What were the reasons for choosing a 3-year contract over a 1-year contract? What other cities have changed models similar to this? Did they see similar results? While I appreciate the offer to meet, I frankly don't know what we would talk about? I guess I would ask you how you could shoot this video with a straight face?: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zEjetFzyYgo

There are more people on the payroll now than under Healy, more people means more salaries and higher taxes eventually.

just one example, Paterson, NJ, only 2/3 the size of Jersey City saved more than $2m annually by switching to flat fees for insurance brokers. what did our city council do ? approved hiring/retaining a broker, not for the typical 1 year time frame, but locked us into a 3 year agreement and locked us out of potential cost savings.

So Dan, what would you and your Team Healy have proposed to do here? It's easy to say "cut spending!" but what would you actually do if you and Team Healy won? What items would you cut from the budget?

We got an 8% increase last year in city taxes, and a "2%" reduction this year. Overall in my book that's a 6% increase. This year, the County plans to increase JC taxes by about 6%. I hate to look at the math, but both the City and County are simply raping us on property taxes, while pretending not to. Anyone else getting a 6-12% year-on-year increase on their personal earnings? Might ask DeGise and Fulop wtf is going on? Yun is on point in that respect. http://www.nj.com/hudson/index.ssf/20 ... _tax_hike_on_the_way.html http://www.nj.com/jjournal-news/index ... n_county_budget_mean.html

Jersey City Councilman Michael Yun talks municipal taxes, ?political tricks? http://youtu.be/zoN1_qr522Q the budget still has not been passed, and it does not include much in the way of cost savings/reduction.

He makes a very good point. We got hit with a pretty big increase last year, supposedly for one-off items, that didn't get rolled back this year. Mind you, during the Healy years we got sucker-punched almost every year that way.
