When at Zeppelin Hall, ask for a glass. They often have glass mugs available but they default to plastic ones, since people go nuts and like to steal glass mugs. Beer tastes much better out of a proper glass though, those plastic mugs have an off taste and smell to them.

Haha, true. I don't think they've cleaned their lines since they opened their doors!

However, if you want it to taste like it should, go elsewhere.

I'm not sure how much "cheap" local beer you're going to find, other than the stuff coming out of the Anheuser-Busch-Inbev factory in Newark. If Ballantine were still around, then maybe.

Carton is frequently on tap at Barcade and White Star (more often at White Star, as Barcade is frequently rotating). Carton Boat is a great Session IPA, and Carton of Milk is an awesome stout. Last time I went to White Star they had Carton's Monkey Chased the Weasel on tap, which is not for everyone.

Not too many liquor stores carry Carton Boat cans right now and they don't can their other stuff, but we should make the cut for their next round of expansion.

Other great local beer: NJ Beer Co. Awesome guys and great friends of ours. As Monroe said, the real deal is at their brewery, where you can get really cheap pints, 6-packs, and growlers to go. (or stop by our shop for some, we've got everything that NJBC sells).

Bolero Snort is pretty local as well, just north of us in Bergen County, and another small operation. Their beers are reasonably priced too, and they do a lot more experimentation than NJBC. Grazer is a new dry-hopped wheat beer that's a great summer drink. Longhop IPA is a pretty good session IPA. They're pretty well priced too. And we've got their Black Lager, Rye, and Amber Lager too.

And I've been talking too long. If you want to stop by our shop, we will talk your ear off about beer, especially local breweries. We're friends with a lot of local breweries, including 4 new breweries that will be opening in the next year or so.

NJ Beer Co in North Bergen, make a left off Tonnelle Avenue onto 43rd or drive up JFK and work your way over. I think it's the first light off Tonnelle after the exit to Route 3.

They keep hours on Fri and Sat, and some Thursdays in summer. As a brewery, they sell direct, and their growlers (64oz/gallon) are only a $8 or $10 fill depending on your choice. As I recall, their Hudson Pale Ale is $8, and the LBI India Pale Ale is $10. To buy a growler bottle is $5. When you visit, you can sample 4 different 4oz pours, and pints are $4 or $5.
