They all do something, and have real personalities (although I don't know any of them personally...). Unlike, say the "celebrity" in NYC, which is mostly hangers-on, offspring of celebrities and wannabees, etc.

More like the author's friends and acquaintances, most likely. The author is part of the small JC downtown 'arts scene'.
