the Nick Offerman event will be at the Loews Theater. I think it's safe to say this will draw an equal-or-larger crowd.

How do you get a ticket? I wanted to try and talk to him about a new show idea.

I've been there for several of the author events and most are ticketed. I imagine this one will sell out fast. They sell enough for seats + SRO, so get in line early or you'll be standing. Well worth it though, because it's intimate unlike when authors speak at 92Y, etc.

I'm suspecting the King appearance will be limited to a finite number of purchasers. Othewise it'd be bedlam.

That awesome. I've never been inside there, how many people can it hold? If it is the only appearance in the tri-state area I imagine it will draw a pretty big crowd.

@bodhipooh: sorry for the late response. You're right - traditionally, "lucky" money is for unmarried people only. However, it can get very complicated very quickly:

- how about unmarried people who are over a certain age?
- how about people living together, but not officially married?
- how about single mothers / fathers (not married, but have kids out of wedlock)
- and on and on...

These can be sensitive discussion points in a chinese household during chinese new years

What you need is a "red envelope" and put some money in it (it's sold everywhere in chinatown this week). Even just a few dollars - like $8, which is a lucky number in China (and if you can, don't forget to use new, "crispy" dollars, as the tellers in chinatown calls them) as a token/symbol for prosperity and good luck.

Hey, SRhia, correct me if I am wrong, but from my travels throughout China (Taiwan, Hong Hong and the mainland) my understanding is that giving "lucky" money has now become a tradition of bestowing money on singles. I remember spending a Chinese New Year in HK where I was told only to give new, crispy bills to singles, and I was told the same in Taiwan.

In any case, Chinese New Year (particularly in Taiwan) was a great excuse to eat and drink a good deal. :)

Dagmara Dominczyk Discusses The Lullaby of Polish Girls

WORD Bookstore?s Jersey City location hosted Dagmara Dominczyk and her husband, the actor Patrick Wilson, to discuss her novel, The Lullaby of Polish Girls (June 2013). The book was recently released in paperback, and as of today, a translated version has been released in Dominczyk?s native Poland.

RUTH OZEKI READS A TALE FOR THE TIME BEING, INAUGURATES READINGS AT WORD JERSEY CITY

Novelist Ruth Ozeki was in New York?s unofficial sixth borough, Jersey City, to celebrate the release of the paperback edition of her novel A Tale for the Time Being. Brooklyn?s WORD Bookstore opened a second store in Jersey City late last month; Ozeki became the first author to read in the new space and she described the store as having that ?new bookstore smell.?

A Tale for the Time Being follows Nao (pronounced ?now?), a teenage girl in Tokyo writing diary entries, and a novelist, Ruth, who finds the diary washed ashore in British Columbia.

Stopped in at WORD on Monday. The space isn't huge, but the store offers a nicely curated selection of books. I found 3-4 books that I hadn't heard of before that I wanted to read. Took one home with me: instant gratification.

That's what you don't get on Amazon.

Like most successful independent booksellers in the city, WORD operates a business model that involves hosting many frequent author events and panels. These events drive book sales, and with a cafe component, will also drive coffee sales. WORD is a significant development for downtown Jersey City because they have access to many of the top literary authors and existing relationships with publishers, agents, and publicists through their existing store. They are a well respected brand within the literary scene.

There are a handful of literary authors living in Jersey City, but there doesn't have much of a literary scene of its own. By contrast, Brooklyn and Manhattan have thriving literary scenes, both those that slide toward the academic and those that slide toward the more commercial.

A literary scene of writers, editors and publishers functions as a community that supports each other, buys books, reads works and attends events. Among New York's literary scenes are obvious institutions like The Paris Review and the New York Review of Books or newer organizations like n+1, The New Inquiry, or The Atlas Review. There are many more new literary publications and plenty of older ones too; the common thread is that they are all located in Manhattan and with the newer publications, tend to be in Brooklyn.

The importance of WORD's arrival in Jersey City is that the first store opened in Greenpoint at a time when the literary scene was focused on Manhattan and southern Brooklyn. WORD nurtured a growing northern Brooklyn literary scene centered around the shop. The risk is that Jersey City has not matured enough to support a literary scene, and also that the New York literary scene is less interested in traveling across the Hudson.

Again, this makes WORD in a somewhat unique position in its ability to cash in on its name to attract members of the New York literary community to Jersey City. WORD's brand among the literary scene is a good one. And don't forget, the people who write about the literary scene are part of that scene. Tachair isn't on anyone's radar, but WORD certainly is. Because the people who write book news know and recognize WORD, they are writing about it. Tachair book simply doesn't have the trust and existing following as a place like WORD that has built up good will within the literary community.

If you don't see the value in a brick and mortar bookstore, don't worry, you aren't the target demographic anyway. If you don't attend author readings, don't worry, nobody in the literary scene cares about your opinion anyway. Its not really a surprise that a person who gets really excited about partying at The Standard wouldn't see the value in a bookstore. if you're looking to stock up on discounted Harlequins, or if you read more than one book on the Amazon list of 2013 best sellers, don't worry, you aren't the customer. Buy your books from Amazon or the Hudson Newstand; that's why those books are published as "mass market" paperbacks.

Ultimately, the real question at hand isn't whether the people on this thread will buy first run books at WORD; its clear you aren't the demographic. The real question is whether Jersey City is sophisticated enough to maintain and support even a a fledgling literary scene and if proximity to New York is enough to allow a bookstore like WORD to survive.

Two reasons probably: they are mostly used books (yes, they have some new ones) and they are fairly small.

Like I said, I hope they succeed. I may even drop in to browse. Would I invest in a bookstore in 2013? Definitely not. But hey, it's not a cheap take-out chicken place or a discount store so it's good in my book.
