OK. It sucks that bikes are getting stolen but the police have more important issues to deal with. I'm not trying to tear you down, just stating the obvious.

You may want to look into starting a volunteer neighborhood watch group for small crimes and quality of life issues as to not drain resources away from the police for these sorts of petty crimes.

The city should use its resources as efficiently as it can, yes. But if you subscribe to the broken windows theory, using police resources to cut down on petty crime may also have positive effects on the rate of larger crimes, too.

Maybe Jersey City can collaborate with Transportation Alterative and get training to help slow the theft of bicycles. I remember years ago in Jersey City they had an anti bike theft program where you could register your bike and get a personalized ID number engraved on the underside of the bottom bracket of the bike. Perhaps we can get the folks at Bike JC initiate both anti theft ideas and open up the idea to the bike riding public. To me this is a serious issue.

Try to take pictures of the offenders when you see such activity.

Why not rig up the bike to fail when the thief ride away. Perhaps loosen the brakes or mess with other mechanics to make the bike difficult to take.

There's more of a chance of finding your stolen bike being advertised in a nearby city then in our own backyard. It might be worth taking a photo of all the bikes outside that pet store and posting them on forums (like jclist /craiglist) in neighboring cities within a 20 mile radius to see if we get a 'hit' with victims of theft!

How are there always bikes for sale by the pet store on Jersey and Newark ave?

Why don't we report stolen bikes on this site then if anyone sees them being sold or ridden around town we can log it in to the police.

Those of you who have spotted people matching the description of the bike thieves, please call the police info line and give them this info. If these guys are implicated in multiple crime scenarios it might give the police leverage to question them.

I saw two guys on bikes turn on Marin from York St. last week. The tall guy was thin and had a bandage on his forearm and seemed to be in his late 40s or early 50s. The other was a young kid in his early teens. When I walked in front of Tommy Two Scoops, there was a smashed car window right in front and I bet they are the same guys.

oh no! we saw those guys last night, the tall guy with the forearm bandage was walking. the other guy was on a bike. we were on our way back from torico's walking up jersey towards the park and there was something about them that seemed a bit off. they were in the area of jersey & 2nd i believe. they both noticed our dog immediately and kept moving. we looked back a few times to see if they were up to something but they turned up 2nd towards erie so we lost sight of them.

fyi ~ Our neighbor's bike with a green child seat was stolen in broad daylight this morning right in front of me. A workman noticed the man who was messing around suspiciously in the stairwell of our neighbor's house and pointed him out. It was obvious that he was breaking the lock on the bikes. I said excuse me, what are you doing and the guy mumbled something, casually lifted one of the bikes over the fence and took off riding it down Jersey Ave. toward 6th Street. Later other witnesses said he had a teenage look-out across the street. I called the police who came right away. The thieves were both African American. The older guy had a huge bandage wrapped around his forearm.

oh and the police said a registered serial number is key to getting a stolen bike back so go register your bikes...
