Aside from the symbolism, after looking at those pictures, I can understand why no one wants to use that desk. Hideous

Please DO NOT restore this desk. Sure, if there are splits in the wood or a piece of hardware is missing fix those sorts of thing but please keep the wear marks, the dents, etc.

Sanding and re-staining this piece of JC history would be a travesty.

Email HagueDesk@jcnj.org to voice your opinion on what to do with the desk

Small desk used by Jersey City's "Boss" Hague is in storage awaiting restoration

By Terrence T. McDonald/The Jersey Journal
on September 27, 2013 at 3:00 AM,
updated September 27, 2013 at 3:05 AM

A desk belonging to legendary former Jersey City mayor Frank Hague that was recently housed in a top city attorney?s office is being put in storage, with city officials hoping it can be restored to its former glory.

The dusty desk, which stands only about 3 feet tall and has a broken drawer, is not theone seen in old pictures inside the Mayor?s Office. John Hallanan, a preservationist and assistant city attorney, said it was probably in the office Hague had at the former second police precinct on Seventh Street.

"From the Frank Hague Desk" would have been a great title for a column chronicling Jersey City corruption. Hopefully that will no longer be needed.

I believe the Frank Hague desk now resides in the office of City Clerk Robert Byrne. It belonged to a previous City Clerk and Mayor, Thomas F.X. Smith.

For you young folks who didn?t know about Mayor Hague below is a good read about him. Biography: Thomas Fleming was born in 1927 in Jersey City, New Jersey, the son of an Irish-American World War I hero who was a leader in Jersey City politics for three decades, starting in the 1920s. At the time, the city was dominated by an Irish political machine. "Irish politics was the be-all and end all." [1]

After graduating from St. Peter's Preparatory School, Jersey City in 1945, Fleming spent a year in the United States Navy. He received a Bachelor's degree, with honors, from Fordham University in 1950. He was admitted as an honorary member of The Society of the Cincinnati in 1975.

A great read.

I definitely think it should be in a museum, or in a glass case in the lobby of city hall with an appropriate signage explaining the desk, why its kept - that it should serve as a reminder of corruption and that we all deserve better and need to keep our politicians honest.

They should put it in the Jersey City Museum.

Yes it is there and I have seen it. At one point Bill Matsikoudis had it as his desk. (And no, he did not ask me for a bribe. Enough already).

Why should we destroy it. There are numerous items throughout the US that are palced in museums that were part of illegal activities. This is something that showcases the level of corruption during that time.

Sell it to whom? The desk itself should be a museum object. If nothing else, it could be exhibited within city hall, accompanied by an informative label. (And that still from Boardwalk Empire.)

Sell it to the highest bidder. If said bidder wishes to donate it in such a way so it can be on public display, so be it.

I don't think we should have nostalgia for a corrupt past.

But those who forget the past are destined to repeat it.

There's a difference between remembering the past and fetishisizing it. I don't like the idea that it is still being used today, like it's some sort of quaint joke.

By putting it up for bid you're publicizing it. Young children will think corruption is ok.

Shall we tear down The Beacon condos?

In 1932, Hague, a friend of Al Smith, backed Smith against Franklin D. Roosevelt during the race for the Democratic nomination. When Roosevelt won the nomination, Hague offered to organize the biggest political rally anyone had ever seen if Roosevelt would launch his presidential campaign in New Jersey. When Roosevelt formally began his campaign with an event at the Jersey Shore town of Sea Girt, Hague's machine made sure there were several thousand Hudson County voters looking on and cheering.[38] Hague?s support was rewarded with funding for a massive medical center complex complete with a maternity hospital named after his mother, Margaret Hague.[39] During the 1936 campaign Hague provided 150,000 adults and children to cheer Roosevelt during a visit.[35]

The guy who wrote "I Am the Law," the biography of Frank Hague, said it is true and the city clerk is the one who uses the desk now.

As linked in another thread, on last night's Rachel Maddow show, the host took a segment to talk about the Jersey City mayoral election and the removal of Healy, or "The Naked Mayor", as she called him, from office.

http://video.msnbc.msn.com/the-rachel-maddow-show/51899405

http://video.msnbc.msn.com/the-rachel-maddow-show/51899485

She introduced Jersey City politics by talking about the fabled Hague Desk at City Hall. This is the supposed desk used by famed crook Frank Hague during his dictatorial reign as mayor of the city. It has a specially-designed featured, a draw which opens to both the front and back, so a guest could conveniently deposit cash for bribes, kickbacks and whatnot.

I've heard of this desk before. Is it true that such a desk existed and does it actually still reside in city hall?

If it does, would you not agree that it is high time for it to be removed? Why continue to memorialize the corruption that has plagued Jersey City seemingly forever? We should not be nostalgic for lawbreakers who abused the office and the public trust.

It would be a symbolic gesture, for sure, but an important one. Jersey City should no longer be the city of Frank Hague. It should be the city of the future.
