I myself was not born and raised here (born in Trenton, raised in South Philly), but the first members of my family to emigrate to the US on my father's side all came here in the 1800s, and stayed in Jersey City, Newark and environs for many years (my father was the first to decamp to Philadelphia). I have framed in my house my great-grandparents' marriage certificate from the 1850s - all in old-timey German script except for "Jersey City, New Jersey." So when I returned to J.C. 20 years ago, I felt I was returning to my roots!

Live all of one's life in Jersey City? That is sad.

Great Article! I'm born and raised here, parents emigrated here over 30 years ago and I will *try to live in JC the rest of my life.
My favorite part of the Article: Quote:
*try to survive the gentrification

Terrific article, long overdue. I guess every town in this country has had their share of life long residents. My grand parents who came from Europe/Italy by boat arrived at Ellis Island in 1922 and settled in the Horseshoe district better known as Hamilton Park in Downtown J.C. . My grandfather made his living as a shoemaker which provided food and shelter for a wife and 6 children. Jersey City was a great town for many decades to raise families, eventually most of my family either moved away or passed away. I am the last of the family to still exist here in the Heights section of Jersey City and hope to never leave.
