That place has been empty or nearly so every time I've gone in the past few years. I think the indoor smoking ban may have hit them especially hard, because it used to be packed when I first moved here. Seems like they have much more space than they make use of. It'd be cool if they could have bands play in there.

It's called Rolon's.

Sure OK -- but what is the dirtiest dive bar in town?

I am putting a blog together for dive bars here in JC. Has any one been to O'Abbey's Corner Grill & Pub or Bayside Tavern? These spots are next on my list of places to try... Actually West side has quite a few on my list.

Cheers!

There already is one, it can't be mentioned here though.

What about defunct bars such as Narrowbacks and the recently closed Western Slope ? Both bars are no more, the WS due to the recent death of owner Willie of the Slope bar. They were in close proximity of each other where the Slope had more of a dive effect than the other. Narrowbacks held many Irish meetings and had get togethers upstairs for small events such as lunchons and dinners. The Slope was a good spot to grab a beer and shoot a game of pool.

Yes, but in 6 pack quantities, and for about double what you'd pay in a store before 10 pm. Burke's will sell an actual case and not rip you off too bad.

True... I once visited the The Cyprus Tavern on Garfield and disliked it. Sorry to all the truckers out there; but I have gone back just to buy beer, to go.

White Star barely counts as a dive anymore -- in many ways it has more in common with Hamilton Inn than with L7's.

Nobody has mentioned Guillo's (Coles & 6th) yet. I haven't hung out there much but when I have it was a good time and the old regulars didn't seem to mind a different crowd being present. It's for sale, and who knows what, if anything, will replace it.

Burke's (14th & Grove) is an interesting establishment. They alone can sell cases of beer after 10 pm. From what I've heard, this is due to a grandfather clause -- is Burke's the longest continuously operating bar downtown? My only other guesses for that title would be the Barge Inn or maybe Rolon's. Burke's will also sell partially consumed bottles of hard alcohol from behind the bar.

The Park Tavern on Westside, which also has the best burgers in JC.

The Lamp Post ... or Lucky 7. Occasionally the Latin Lounge or Indios just for kicks and giggles.

Journal Square: Jack Millers Pub
5 Corners: Grapevine
Downtown: Golden Cicada
Heights: Corkscrew Tavern (not sure a dive)
Western slope Greenville: Mojo Lounge (not sure a dive)

If I had to choose one... Jack Miller's Pub (definitely a dive). Cheap booze, eclectic crowd, and an old school jukebox.
