It doesn't make any sense paying $75 upfront to be told what the DMV will tell you for free. The only possible saving is time spent on a second trip to the DMV. I'd have thought most mechanics would have thrown in the check for free as part of a servicing such as an oil change, winterization or tire rotation.

the reason why is my mechanic punjab on Division street told me since my car is 20 years old they will find all kinds of things wrong so its better to go to Auto works and pay 75 dollars for them to do a diagnostic test to avoid paying more... is this a scam Im not sure which way to go...

I second Robin's observation. When I went earlier in the year, all they did was stick the probe into the exhaust and stare at the computer display for a minute or two. The guy didn't even look at the lights or anything. The whole process took 5 minutes tops. The guys on duty seemed too bored to care about anything else.

I thought that Christie had cancelled the majority of the inspection, and that now all they do is the federally mandated emissions check.

You should be able to pass even with no working lights Brewster!

Robin.

Why not go to DMV 1st and see if you actually fail. It won't cost you anything and when you go back you don't have to go through all the tests, just what you failed. Maybe you'll be lucky.

Check all your lights! I always forget that stupid detail and have to return after buying a bulb.

Definitely A M.

My car failed the emissions inspection and I had to replace the catalytic converter. A M did the job and charged me half of what Sears and Firestone wanted to charge me.

A M AUTO REPAIR SHOP
373 6th Street
Jersey City, NJ 07302
(201) 795-5520

I've used these guys for years, and they've always provided a fair and excellent service. I'm not sure whether they have a license to perform inspections yet, but last inspection, and they offered to drive the car to the inspection center for me after servicing.

Also I believe AOne on Bay Street can perform inspections for around $100. One inspection they fixed a "check engine light" issue for free.
