The state of the schools is a constant conversation on Jersey City Moms - a meetup group for families with kids 0-6. May I suggest that your friend join the group and get in on the conversation. Yes, the schools have problems, but there are some good things going on and a lot of families within the downtown community who are working hard to change things.

JC public schools are some of the worst in the state. Do what most families in JC do - send their kid to private school or get out of JC. It's the only humane thing to do to your kid.

Daughter of a friend is moving to the Harsimus Cove area and asked how the public school system is. We've no children so have little idea and I don't recall seeing recent posts on the topic. Just asking for general impressions, whether things are improving or not, etc.
