Jersey bread is crap, compared to bread from where? Europe? As far as the 50 states go, NJ is way up there in terms of quality bread it churns out.

This sounds good. I prefer a heartier bread than an amoroso roll.

You can get a decent ribye sandwhich from Healy's Tavern. They use bread from Peccororo's.

If you have the craving for a true philly cheese steak try:
http://www.philssteaks.com/ Cheese steak truck. A cheese steak aficiando turned me on to Phil's and I haven't looked back. Fresh Philly bread picked up daily. Often near union sq. ****I have no problem with Wogies. They put out a fine product as well.

Exactly, Pats and Ginos are for tourists and drunks. It's garbage after two bites. I've had Phillys Cheesesteak in Hobo and I agree, it's the best I've tried so far. I don't see whats so hard. I can to almost any pizza shop or sandwich shop south of the Driscoll Bridge and get a decent one but up here, no one can get it right. Looks like I'm making my own.

PATH to 9th street, short walk to Wogies.
Tried the "cheesesteak" special @ PArk&6th. Was weird. Essentially a sandwich sized small steak on a bun with fixings. Not your typical shaved/griddle'd offering. Love the spot, did not love that sandy.

Although I hate to recommend a place in Hoboken over JC, Philly's Cheesesteak in Hoboken on Washington is as close to a real Philly steak as I've gotten in the area. They are the only ones who get the bread right, and they have whiz. Piccolos in Hoboken, as mentioned, is fantastic too, but it is not Philly style.
If you are going to go all the way to Philladelphia, Tony Luke's is the best IMHO. I much prefer it to Pat's or Geno's. I have tried a lot of cheesesteaks in JC and none really are that great. I was hoping for someone to throw out a new spot on this thread but alas I think the answer is that there is no great place for one in JC

Only one solution, really. Get in car, take NJ Tpk south to Philadelphia. Find Passyunk Ave. Choose Pat's or Geno's. I prefer Pat's but I've found they both taste the same when drenched in red hot sauce.
The great thing about local specialties, like cheese steaks, is going to the locality where they're made right.

Not quite downtown, and not a Philly cheese steak, but Piccolo's on Clinton & Newark in Hoboken do a great ribeye cheese steak.

It's not in JC, but a great cheese steak can be had in Manhattan. Shorty's @ 42nd and 9th is the best I've had anywhere outside of Philly. They have Philly's and Roast Pork sandwiches. The bread is also shipped in daily from Sarcone's, a Philly bakery that has been around forever that specializes in breads.
FYI: Shorty's is a bar and the music in there can be a bit loud and ridiculous depending on what time you go, but the food minimizes the distractions.

I went to school in Philly so nothing on that level but I've enjoyed Carmine's Cheesesteak. Also, years ago, had a huge, tasty cheesesteak from Jordan's Catfish Station but I'n not sure / don't think that's been open for years.

I like Delenios at the corner of 7th and Brunswick. It isn't a mind blowing cheesesteak, but I do enjoy it the most out of all the ones I have tasted.
They are also the only place in DTJC that I have found that does a legit chicken cheesesteak. Not grilled chicken chopped up. Not cubes. Actual shredded chicken

Anyone know of a good spot for cheese steaks downtown?
Stella's is the only place on delivery dot com that comes up. It seems like every cheese steak I've had from a pizza joint DTJC is sub-par at best.
