A few years ago, I worked on one of those homes. First thing we did was install 5/8 inch Type X drywall, fire rated foam, and cellulose insulation to create a firestop. The building was gut-renovated only a few years earlier. I was shocked that the builder didn't do that, or the building department didn't require it.

Hopefully this fire will give cocklofts the attention they deserve. People living in homes like these all over Jersey City should at least be given information about the risks and preventative measures.

Thank you for your answers. I use a nebulizer and an inhaler, and sometimes my smell and taste get a bit off, but I AM afraid of fire in my building. Gotta get me a coon dog to sniff these things out!

Have a great Easter. Sorry for the people involved in the fire.

Radio said that there's a big fire on westside. I can see the smoke from my deck.

Anybody know the nature of a noxious odor wafting through the windows five-ish this morning? Smelled electrical or petroleum-based. Who knows?

Thanks.
