I get fruit flies usually in late spring/early summer. Ugh I hate them! Usually it's the bananas so I toss them out and don't buy them for a while, or at least only buy 2 at a time and eat them within a day.
The best trap is to wash out an empty soda bottle, and pour in some cider vinegar and a squirt of dish soap and leave it out overnight. Those suckers just fly right in and die. You may have to leave out the bottle for several days until you trap all of them. The best thing about this method is you can cap the bottle and toss it out when you're done. I heard that if you toss the dead bugs in the drain they might still have eggs? Not sure if that's true or not. You need to make sure your dishes are washed and pour bleach in your drain, throw out your garbage every day etc. I'll try washing the bananas from now on to see if that works. Also, keep your onions in the fridge, they like those too.

Brewster, I have been battling pantry moths for a while now as well. I won't see one for a month or so, and then all of a sudden they are back. Very frustrating ... have you had any luck battling them?

I find I have luck staving them off when I wash the fruit I buy as soon as I get it home.

Nope, not possible. Even if you rarely used your sink, they're not aquatic! It's just not where they breed, which is in soft fruit like bananas. In genetics class we bred them in stuff similar to mashed potatoes. The bane of our kitchen is moths. They can bore through thin plastic bags, and be breeding in never opened products in the pantry.

Thanks. I think they are fungus gnats. Problems is I don't know where they are coming from since we don't have any indoor plants.
I am taking a ton of them out with sticky fly traps but I'd rather stop them at the source!!

If you have houseplants they could be fungus gnats which are similar to fruit flies.

Not sure if we have fruit flies but we are having a similar problem. Can't seem to locate the source or how they are getting in. These little black flies are very annoying!!

There about 8-10 that are around the house.
We do have that bowl with vinegar/soap in our kitchen, but good idea about the Saran wrap. I just assumed they'd be all dead by now...

Maybe you have a piece of rotted fruit wedged hidden somewhere in your house. Are the flies in one location or just scattered about ?

I get them off and on, mostly in the summer and sometimes in the fall. I always figured they came from the drain.
The best trap I found for them is a small dish or cup with red vinegar and a little dish soap on top, put saran wrap over it and poke a few holes in it. They are totally attracted to it and will crawl in, can't get out, and die. Also make sure your sink drain is clean, try pouring some boiling water and some bleach down it.

Anyone have fruit flies in their place? We can't figure out what it could be in our place and wonder if others are noticing them or it is our dirty neighbor...
