Check out Provident Bank. They are all over Jersey City, including Journal Square. They pay over 2% interest on checking and refund all ATM fees, provided you get direct deposit and use your ATM card as a credit card 10 times in a month.

Try a credit union. They offer Surcharge-Free ATMs all over the country.

Well I'm kinda miffed that they shut the JSQ branch down. I really don't like Bank of America or the other local options to JSQ and the Newport branch is darn inconvenient.... HSBC has free checking for one and good presence in NYC as well as upstate.
Found some news articles: http://hoboken.patch.com/articles/hsbc-to-close-hoboken-branch Looks like they have closed the Hoboken and Newark branches as well. I was wondering if anyone else has petitioned them to re-open JSQ? The sign says to contact: HSBC Licensing Manager, Office of the Comptroller of Currency, Northeastern District Office, 340 Madison Ave, 5th floor, New York NY 10017. - Mandar
