I was just in Washington DC and they have a really great Bike share system as well.

I hope to see one developed in JC as well.

if you are not happy with the "state" of bicycling, get involved with http://bikejc.org/

there is a special election this November 8th for two city council seats. ask the candidates (I am one) if they support bike lanes (I do).

there is a virtual candidates forum being set up on facebook, visit and ask here - http://www.facebook.com/JerseyCityCouncilCandidatesForum

while we are at that, ask for more bike racks where we need them.

I was just in Boston this past weekend and they have bike sharing systems all over the city. I would love to see a system like this in Jersey City. But being realistic we still do not have a single bike lane. It's pathetic!

You can also "Support" someone else's suggestion - lots of the NYC locations have many supporters already, so if you really want to see a JC location, go in and "Support" these locations.

planned bike sharing system. I know it makes the most sense in Manhattan but who's to say JC and Hoboken could benefit, maybe encourage more people to visit LSP and Lincoln Park and help development in our fine cities.

New York City is beginning to implement a bike share system like those frequently found in European cities; usually with the swipe of a credit card or a membership card (like with Zip car), bicyclists rent bicycles for short periods of time and can return the bikes to any of the renting stations. ( more on
Bike Sharing systems)

The New York City program is being developed in conjunction with a private company. Since the program is neither a city nor state base program and involves a for profit company, there really is no reason why the company couldn't also build a complimentary, integrated system in places like Jersey City and Hoboken.

The NYC DOT set up an interactive map for users to suggest bicycle station locations. There doesn't appear to be any restriction prohibiting the suggestion of a location in downtown Jersey City. So if anyone is interested in this program, check out the interactive map set up for suggesting bike rental stations. Keep in mind, the program is being run by a private company, not the city of New York, which means the only thing preventing the private company from setting stations in Jersey City is local political cronyism.
