And flooding and standing water can't help....

I have been eaten up by mosquitoe this year around town like I have not been since being a kid in the Pine Barrens. It makes me wonder if the mild flu like illness I have had for the past three or four days might be West Nile. Internet info seems to say 80% are asymptomatic, about 20% get a mild case (headache and fatigue being prominent symptoms, and less than 1% get life threatening West Nile Fever.

Mosquitoes testing positive for the potentially fatal West Nile virus have been identified in four municipalities in Hudson County.

With the most active season for West Nile Virus in full swing, Hudson County Regional Health officials are advising residents to take precautions, especially around dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are out and about.

Insects infected with West Nile virus in the last few weeks have been found near Hook Road and Ingham Avenue in Bayonne; Central Avenue, West Hudson Park and Gunnel Oval Park in Kearny; James J. Braddock Park in North Bergen; and Caven Point Road in Jersey City.

Officials advise people who suffer any symptoms including aches, pains and fever to see a doctor. People are advised to use an Environmental Protection Agency-approved insect repellent and wear long pants and long sleeves and avoid humid and shady wooded areas at dusk and dawn, officials said.

Health officials also recommend residents eliminate standing water around the home, including in gutters and downspouts.

Hudson Regional Health Commission treated areas with infected mosquitoes with pesticides on Tuesday to kill adult mosquitoes, officials said.
