Try Hacklebarney State Park which is in Chester,NJ about 45 min. to an hour from JC.About a 2 hour hike not much of an incline and pretty shaded.Goes around a steam and there is a waterfall to.Also lots of barbeques through out and benches.

I've heard there's good trails on Staten Island but I don't know the details. Can anyone confirm?

If you're looking for somewhere close, I've gone up to Palisades Interstate Park. Beautiful natural and urban views. You can walk down to the river in some places as well. Plenty of parking, too. It's absolutely gorgeous in the fall.
