The poster above stated that the place should have been more packed. Well come September it will, Tom Paxton will really reel them in. So it would behoove everyone to make a reservation for this show.

Finally a jclister interested in the Brennan folk music gigs. Thats why I always post on here hoping to generate some excitement. I'd like to get an idea of how many jclisters attend the Brennan Coffee House. They are part of the NY Metropolitan area folk music circut and promoted by WFUV radio 90.7fm.

I will be at these from now on. I'm happy to try to help get the word out. Based on the quality of music, that place should have been much more packed. Well done!

Just curious, has anyone from JCLIST gone to the Brennan for any of their monthly folk music gigs ? They had a decent crowd I saw the Irish duo last night and they had a poetic sound with nice acoustics and a bit of Irish wisdom and humor about them.

CANCELED ! Due to the weather. The band comes up from South Jersey due to the flooding in that area it prevented the band from arriving at the venue.

So yes, it would be very interesting to see if they have to abide by the same rules that Made with Love, Gallery 58 and others must abide or fail by.

I'd be interested to see how tax dollars are being spent on the Brennan Coffee House as well. Is is self sufficient, or is Jersey City spending tons of money to bring in these artists to put on little shows for a bunch of cronies up in the courthouse?

If so, why are we spending money for the government to put on these performances in a courthouse when we have tons of venues all over Jersey City where private organizations could be putting on great shows if JC would simply stop crushing everyone that tried.

Maybe I'm totally wrong on this, but I'm highly suspicious.

The venue of the Brennan is the old County Court House run by the County of Hudson hence Hudson County. They also charge money ofr tickets anywhere from $15 to $20. So I don't know where city tax dollars come into play here.

The Jersey Journal wrote:
"It is absolutely shameful in a time when the lowest level city employees were laid off, they grant health benefits to politically connected cronies that the taxpayers fund," Fulop said.
"Most of the City Council and administration clearly do not understand how they are hurting the regular taxpayers."

But Eileen Gaughan, chairwoman of the MUA, disagreed with Fulop and said commissioners are on call 24 hours a day to serve the public.

"Despite what Councilman Fulop is leading the public to believe, the hours that are put in during the meetings are just the tip of the iceberg as far as being commissioners and serving the public," she said.

I wonder if they have the infamous "cabaret license" this city randomly enforces.

What makes you say that ?? Can you provide details on the license requirements ? Finally a venue that supports the folk music circuit and you to find a way to knock it. The have some pretty good acts I hope you at least tried it out it is a sensational place and you have to get an earfull of the accoustics there. If you listen to WFUV 90.7 Fit will give you an insight on the folk music scene in the Nyc FM metroploitan area, including the Brennan.

My point is that Made with Love got their music shut down by the city for not having this "entertainment license. Gallery 58 is constantly being harassed when it has art openings. And there are many more examples of this archaic law that this city randomly enforces. So my point is that since this is part of the "justice building" they can pretty much do what they please. While at the same time pointing fingers at others trying to do the exact same thing. Anyone trying to make this city a better place is made to jump through endless hoops. I guess you just need tons of cash to get anything done around here.
