Jersey City police say man and woman charged with burglarizing car that had been stolen from owner a few hours earlier

A Jersey City man and woman were arrested yesterday by police officers who were doing surveillance on a car that was carjacked a couple of hours earlier by men who stabbed the car owner, officials said.

Kason S. Herring, 27, of Belmont Avenue, and Yazmin J. Ortiz, 19, of Roosevelt Avenue, were arrested at 12:50 a.m. on Crescent Avenue in the Volkswagen Jetta that was carjacked Tuesday at 10:49 p.m. on Belmont Avenue, reports said.

The owner of the car told police he had gone to Belmont and Summit avenues to meet a woman he had been communicating with on the Internet.

As he was speaking to the woman, who was standing on the driver's side of the car, a man with a knife jumped into the passenger's seat.

During a brief tussle with the man, the victim - a 39-year-old North Bergen man - was cut on his left hand, reports said. The man with the knife and two other men drove off in the car, reports said.

The two people arrested at 12:50 a.m. yesterday were not charged with the carjacking, but with burglary and theft, police said, adding that the investigation is ongoing and active.

Before they were arrested, plainclothes officers who had located the car watched as Herring and Ortiz approached the Jetta and looked in every direction before Herring got in through the passenger side door and began pulling at the dash board, reports said.

When the cops pulled up, Ortiz was frantically waving at Herring to warn him and she said, "Oh (expletive). I think it's the cops," reports said, adding that when they were arrested, Herring had the car radio's faceplate in his hand.

Anyone with information on the crimes is asked to call the Jersey City police tip line at (201) 547-JAIL.

This thread's title is erroneously written. Belmont Ave and Summit location is NOT IN THE HEIGHTS. This is near the old Medical Center which is now Baldwin Condos or something...

Looked for love and 3 took car

A 39-year-old North Bergen man fought off a knife attack in Jersey City on Tuesday before three men made off with his car, police said.

At around 10:49 p.m., the man parked his Volkswagen Jetta on Belmont Avenue near Summit Avenue to meet a woman he had communicated with on the Internet, reports said.

When the woman approached the driver's side window and asked the man to use his cell phone, a man brandishing a knife suddenly jumped into the front passenger seat, police said.

After the driver pleaded for his life, noting he has a wife and kids, the armed man tried to stab him in his side, reports said. The victim fought off the attempt, but was cut on his left hand, police said.

When the victim got out of his car and ran, two more men jumped in the car and drove off west of Belmont Avenue, reports said.

The victim was treated for the knife wound at the scene before telling police he thought his Internet date had set him up, reports said.

The woman was later picked up by police at the corner of Belmont and Crescent avenues and gave a statement. She was not arrested, according to reports.
