Having more information about the national picture--both what is going wrong with education AND what is going right in cities around the country-- can help direct the course for reform in Jersey City schools.
Whitney Tilson's presentation Tuesday night promises to provide just that--information, along with serious discussion and an understanding that JC's problems are ours and are also part of the bigger picture.

I would like to invite to an event that I am co-hosting this upcoming Tuesday (June 22, 2010) at 6:30 p.m. in the City Council Chambers (280 Grove Street, City Hall).

While Jersey City faces a tremendous number of challenges including taxes, crime, property value, and overall quality of life, more often than not those challenges are tied into a failing school system. This Tuesday, June 22nd, we have invited Whitney Tilson, who is one of the founders of Teach for America, to Jersey City to give his acclaimed presentation which was made into a documentary called "A Right Denied: The Need for Genuine School Reform" This is a powerful presentation from a national leader on educational reform. It will focus on the achievement gap in the United States and what steps can be taken to correct it in urban areas like Jersey City.

A panel discussion of statewide leaders including Rev. Reginald Jackson who is the executive director of The NJ Black Ministers Alliance and regarded as one of the 25 most influential people in NJ accordng to NJ Monthly Magazine; Ryan Hill the founder and CEO of the highly successful TEAM Charter Schools in Newark; and Whitney Tilson, will follow the presentation. This will allow for the community to engage directly with the experts on ways that we can work to improve our schools in Jersey City.

Mr. Tilson is often quoted as saying, ?the most important domestic issue facing our country is the mediocre performance ? and, in many cases, outright failure ? of many of our public schools.? His presentation illuminates the stark truth of that statement as well as those schools around the country that have achieved extraordinary success in educating even the most difficult-to-educate students. This is a challenge that we can take on in Jersey City with active leadership and an active community - I hope you can join me this Tuesday 6:30 p.m. in City Hall.

This presentation is brought to you by The Council Office of Ward E and Shelley Skinner, Founder of Jersey City Families for Better Schools.

riazw,
Some of us board members would love to be there but we have a conflict. There was a special meeting called for the same date and time regarding the superintendent, a very important issue.
Aside from that, my hope is to get people on this site and many others at board meetings and interested in issues so we all can shape the future of our education system.

+1 hero69

If a kid comes from a poor home with no stable parents, no charter schools are going to have any more luck than public schools.

As for Reginald Jackson, this man has been on the public teat forever. Corzine paid for his political support for years and even employed Jackson's wife in state government. He is fishing for more money for charter schools that he will ultimarely profit from.

This presentation gets the core of the education debate -- addressing the challenges of out of control school budgets and delivering an effective, quality education for our children. It's well-researched, fact-filled and presented -- and offers much food for thought.

If you can't make it to the presentation, then the attached link is a must read. Every school board member should attend or read this presentation.

All the best.

Whitney Tilson's presentation is really powerful and informative. Anyone who is a stakeholder in school system should come out on the 22nd.

A Right Denied: The Need for Genuine School Reform

Join Whitney Tilson for "A Right Denied," a powerful and unsettling presentation dubbed education's equivalent of "An Inconvenient Truth."

Tilson is co-founder of Democrats for Education Reform, a political action committee that aims to return the Democratic Party to its rightful place as a champion of children, first and foremost, in America's public education systems. He was a founding member of Teach for America, and is vice chairman of KIPP Academy Charter Schools in NYC. The KIPP network has 82 schools in cities around the country.

A panel discussion will follow with Rev. Reginald T. Jackson, executive director of The Black Ministers Council of New Jersey and Ryan Hill, founder and CEO of Newark's TEAM charter schools.

This presentation is brought to you by Shelley Skinner, founder of JC Families for Better Schools, and Councilman Steven Fulop.
