This article came from www.electricityderegulationblog.com

This is a real timely benefit to all NJ Residents , during a time when we all need to tighten our belts and save money! What this means to you is that you can save money on the everyday electric you use in your home or small business. Because when the residential electric deregulation law passes ,you will then have the right to tell your Electric distributor: PSEG ,JCPL or Rockland Electric where you want them to purchase YOUR electric from, for your Home,Investment building or Business! They will always remain your distributor and you will still pay all your bills to to them. You are just telling them to distribute Electric to you from a cheaper NJ approved supplier of your choice. Large Commercial Businesses have enjoyed this deregulation for over 10 yrs. It is only now that NJ is being deregulated in the variable rate market and homeowners are finally able to take advantage of the same cost saving benefits!
In a regulated electricity market, the consumer has no choice. They can only purchase from one source, the local utility. In a regulated market there is no incentive to offer cost saving solutions or innovative products and services. That?s now changing because people in many states now have the right to choose who they buy their electricity supply from.

Deregulation opens the generation portion of your bill to competition. This essentially turns the generated power into a market-based commodity, with the price dictated by supply and demand. Competitive markets lead to innovation and lower costs for customers. A good example of deregulation is long-distance telephone service.

In a deregulated market, the local utility is reduced into an electricity delivery company. This makes it possible for customers to choose an alternate source for the generation portion of their bill which is approximately two thirds of their total cost. All customers continue to rely on their local utility to deliver their electricity, provide service, read their meter and in most cases, bill the customer. This portion of the electricity service remains the same.

Retail competition, in the electricity markets, is superior to regulated service as it delivers customer-focused service, enables innovative product development and leads to the most efficient market price.

All consumers should be afforded the opportunity to participate in competitive retail energy markets and enjoy the benefits that only competitive retail markets can deliver.

Currently there are 20 states in various states of deregulation of their energy markets.
It takes time for a state to achieve true deregulation where the rates are at market rate pricing.

I looked into this last year and there were simply no alternate suppliers at the consumer level.

Energy deregulation is not a scam. You're able to shop the "supply" portion of your gas & electric bill. The delivery will always remain with PSE&G and you will always pay them for maintaining the infrastructure.

Safe to say that the average customer would probably save around 20% off of the supply end, not the total bill.

Better off doing your own research, then contacting energy brokers on your own.

If you do ask someone for an analysis, they would need copies of your past year of bills and a letter of authority allowing them to contact the utility to confirm usage patterns.

There have been scams in the past where people go door-to-door making offers to reduce your electric bill. If you encounter something like this, best to assume it's a scam unless you have a very very good reason to believe otherwise.

Hello all!

Is there another electric company other than PSE&G in Jersey City?
