Jersey City really has 30 homicides and Hudson County really has 35. So homicide is up in JC by 3 and down for the county by one. I guess Hudson County/Jersey City is trying to do what Newark did by not counting certain homicides. Newark is trying to claim 77 when it is really 80.

The citizens could insist that the city hire David Kennedy as a consultant. A wealth of information about him can be found on the Internet.

I am sickened by the number of people killed in our city... something needs to be done to re-educate the people in our city to move away from a mentality of violance. I don't get how this happens and why people are so willing to kill each other... I am very saddened by the statistics..

What can we do to stop this from happening?

The number of murders in Hudson County dropped in 2009, today's Jersey Journal reports.

The bulk of the 31 homicides -- down from 36 in 2008 -- were committed in Jersey City, where all but three of the year's killings occurred. The others were in Bayonne, Union City and Kearny.

The highest profile killing was the slaying of Jersey City Detective Marc DiNardo, who was mortally wounded during a shootout on Reed Street in July. His funeral was attended by thousands.

The first murder of the year took place Jan. 22, when Eliha Benjamin was killed at the bodega where he worked -- a place cops called an illegal gambling den -- in Jersey City.
The final 2009 killing took place on Dec. 30, when Adrian Gerena of Irvington was shot and killed inside the Ringside Lounge on Tonnelle Avenue in Jersey City.

Hudson murders dropped last year; Jersey City had 1 more than in 2008

The number of murders in Hudson County in 2009 dropped by about 14 percent from 2008, while Jersey City had one more than in 2008, officials said.

"The number of homicides can never be considered acceptable," Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio said of the 31 murders in Hudson County in 2009, a drop from 36 the previous year.

"Unfortunately, we see a disproportionate number of young African-American men murdered," DeFazio said.

Eighteen of Jersey City's 28 murder victims in 2009 were men between the ages of 17 and 30. That is 64 percent.

Violence leading to homicides is often related to gangs, drugs and petty disputes that escalate, the prosecutor said, adding that the level of violence is heightened by the availability of illegal guns.

Jersey City Police Chief Tom Comey also lamented the availability of firearms.

"As with any major city, we are not immune from violence," Comey said. "We are forced to deal with the effects of the proliferation of illegal handguns on our streets and the damage they inflict in our community."

1. Dec. 31 - Adrian Gerena, 23, of Irvington, is shot dead in the Ringside Lounge on Tonnelle Avenue at 11:20 p.m. while playing cards and a second man is wounded by the gunfire. Miguel "Migs" Ortiz, 25, of Jersey City, is arrested in Brooklyn on Jan. 7 and charged with the crime.

2. Dec. 25 - Jackie Sinclair, 41, of Jersey City, dies as a result of head trauma suffered during an assault on Nov. 24 in front of his home at 84 Dales Ave. Tim McGeachy, 43, of Clinton Avenue, is charged with the murder after his arrest in Pennsylvania.

3. Dec. 19 - Altarik Perry, 19, of Jersey City, is shot and killed in front of 11 Corcoran St., Jersey City. No arrest has been made and the case remains under investigation.
