I plan to drive but 5+ days in a car with my cats seems like torture for everyone involved.

Thanks to all for the suggestions!

No - you're right - putting a small, scared animal in a container underneath a cold underbelly of a plane isn't cruel - its a regular party.

Hopefully this person will rent a car and drive cross-country - or pay up so the cats are properly looked after.

i had a neighbor who shipped their pug using petairways from NY to LA and they said it went fine. seems like a neat way to transporting your pet if you only need to do it once because you are moving.

i've flown with my dog under the seat a bunch of times and its no picnic unless you have a pet that's pretty laid back / quiet. also airlines are charging 100+ plus now each way additional for traveling with a pet (each pet)(use to be $75) in the cabin.

not cruel, but definitely risky.

traveling with your pet

when I flew Cathay Pacific with my dog, I was given a card at every stopover that said "I made it safely on the plane!" signed with my dog's name. a nice touch.

you might want to advertise on craigslist for someone traveling to your pet's destination, and offer to pay him/her to accompany your pet.

I wonder if they have to go through the same screening crap that humans do?

http://petairways.com/

I don't know anyone who has used it, but it's been getting a lot of press lately.

I'm too slow, see above post about same thing.

I have read good reviews (but never used) about Pet Airways. It is a pet only airplane which is climate controlled, and pets recieve individual attention. The downside is the cost, when I did a quick search it was around 300 from NY to LA and the airports are out of the way (for NYC it was in Farmingdale. Good luck!

You can put them in a carrier and keep them under the seat in front of you. Sending them in the underbelly of the plane is cruel.

5 years ago, I shipped a cat and a dog from LA to DC using American Airlines. I believe any airline will do it, you just have to have somebody on the other end to claim your pet (they don't deliver door-to-door).

it cost about a hundred dollars per critter, which is what they'd charge if I was on the flight with them.

you need an approved pet carrier and a health certificate from your vet, dated within 30 days of travel.

also, they won't fly pets when it dips below a certain temperature.

good luck!

I'm looking for any information regarding cross country pet shipping from Jersey City or nearby. I'm looking to get two cats from JC to LA in the near future. Has anyone ever shipped a pet? How did the pet handle the trip? How much did it cost? What service did you use?
