They capped the radium site (a factory that made those glowly watches a half century ago...the old Valley Fair site) and built housing. They built lots of housing in the Heights over trailings from chromium bumper plants.
Newport was constructed on seriously petroleum product pollution for a centrury of rail yards...remediation consisted of moving the stuff around and around til they FINALLY could get a sample that wasn't too bad (or a "blind" inspector.)

Then there was the underground West Side tire fire that burned for a half century and filled the heights with choking fumes all Summer whenever a Southern breeze blew until it was recently extinguished, as least temporailty.

Only God knows what's underr the Pulaski Skyway and what Amwerican Can dumped during it's long life.

I lived with the acrid stench for many years in the heights from something called the DAVEY Company which spewed a choking acidic burnt cardboardy smoke every day of its long life and where was it located, why immediately next to the Height resevoir...where else ?
God only KNOWS what Colgate dumped...but that waste probably went into the Hudson...one hopes!

Jersey City is an unmitigated environmental disaster covered over with a layer of asphalt so that pricey condos can be sold and unless you are living in a 150 year old house you are probably sitting atop something dangerous. The harder question to answer is what areas AREN'T seriously contaminated.

BTW? A PM is a personal message. Check your Inbox on your account. Also Hamilton Park in downtown JC is contaminated with all kinds of stuff. Looks like they're gonna cap it ($75,000 est) rather than remove it ($500,000-750,000 est). You can read the report on this site.

Getting a stink near Hamilton Park like lighter fluid which is normal if someone is cooking out but this is like the whole world stinks.

Today, Saturday, September 19 there has been a strong odor of paint or some kind of thinner chemical in the air. I live on the Island and the smell made me go inside. I am not sure if it is coming from the Path yard or from the West but it is a really noxious odor. Anyone else out there gettiing this? It was around this morning and then started up again late this afternoon

how about the abandoned lot where a church once stood where everyone with a dog lets their dog shit and piss (without cleaning up) and a garbage dump... it should be turned into a little park at least.

I'm a Journalism student and Jersey City resident.

For the next few months I'm going to be focusing on environmental problems and that face the residents of Jersey City... so I want to hear about what concerns you!

This can really be ANYTHING -- from contamination on rt. 440, to sites you know that need remediation, to the chromium site on Garfield...to smaller matters. Any tip will be appreciated and I'll try to report back anything I discover.
