Corzine Freezes Ridgefield's Finances
by Bob Hennelly WNYC http://www.wnyc.org/news/articles/138040 NEW YORK, NY August 04, 2009 ?Governor Corzine is putting more pressure on elected officials who are still in office, despite facing federal corruption charges. WNYC's Bob Hennelly has more. REPORTER: Corzine has decided to freeze state approvals for projects generated in any town where the sitting mayor faces charges. The mayors of Hoboken and Secaucus have stepped down even as they assert their innocence. So that leaves Ridgefield Mayor Anthony Suarez, who also says he's innocent, and has chosen to remain in office. The governor's executive order mentions no town by name, but it effectively suspends progress on Ridgefield's development applications with the state. The order also requires agencies to investigate the circumstances surrounding the initial applications. Critics call the Governor's move re-election grandstanding. For WNYC, I'm Bob Hennelly. REPORTER: Like Ridgefield Mayor Suarez Jersey City Council President Mariano Vega also has vowed to stay in office while he fights federal charges. Jersey City is not affected by the Governor's Executive order.

the idea is not bad, but the fact is that jersey city and hudson county are one of the most reliable democratic areas in the state. for corzine it is a must to win the county with a broad and steady margin. corzine is definitely playing the game well - he is going after mayors and not the elected officials. it may be so that it is seen less as a reputational liability than mayors under indictement.
that notwithstanding, lopez and vega must go, but compared to headline prettyboy cammarano, who really must have pissed corzine and the democratic party establishment off, these are small fish, not even worth frying. Quote:

"Governor Jon Corzine will sign an executive order Monday freezing state funding to any New Jersey municipality whose mayor has been charged with corruption and refuses to resign."
If the the above statement is accurate, then no because JC's mayor has not been "charged with corruption". However, only a matter of time before Healy gets charged. Governor is probably trying to get elected officials charged to resign "voluntarily" before putting the screws to them. I assume that Hoboken's mayor acquiesced, while Ridgefield's mayor told him to get lost. I am sure we will hear similar announcements about JC elected officials soon, but the Governor also has to be very careful with Jersey City because that's a good chunk of votes. Asking or pressuring Healy to resign when he has not been charged, although he is all over several complaints, would seem unfair and may cost him votes.

Two thumbs up for Governor Corzine for doing the right thing. That's quite an incentive. Let's hope Jersey City is next.
Additionally, after a nice house cleaning (yes, a big assumption), let's hope the City Council in the future will push through Councilman Fulop's past and future initiatives for removing the incentives that help breed corruption like pay-to-play and multiple office holdings. Hey, one can dream, right?

Corzine to Freeze State Funding to 'Corrupt' NJ Cities
TRENTON, N.J. (AP/1010 WINS) -- Governor Jon Corzine will sign an executive order Monday freezing state funding to any New Jersey municipality whose mayor has been charged with corruption and refuses to resign. The order will halt funding to Ridgefield where Corzine is considering a state takeover after Mayor Anthony Suarez was among 44 people -- including two other mayors and two state lawmakers -- arrested in a massive federal corruption probe that rocked the state last month. Corzine has called on all elected officials charged in the probe to resign, but Suarez has refused, saying he's confident he'll be exonerated of allegations that he accepted a $10,000 bribe. Corzine told The Record of Bergen County that he has directed the state comptroller to begin an immediate review of Ridgefield's procurement practices, development contracts and records. So will they go after Jersey City next??>
