Not every one in the projects is to broke to provide for themselves. For some reason many people unfamiliar with how housing projects work think everyone is on welfare and are unemployed. Many people in the projects can afford to have a pet since the rent they pay is adjusted to their income. Plenty of housing project residents have jobs. Besides not everyone has lived in the projects their whole life either they could of had the pet for 10 years and only been living in the projects for 2 years.

Changes to NYCHA?s Pet Policy RESIDENTS OF THE NEW YORK CITY HOUSING AUTHORITY (NYCHA) MAY OWN EITHER ONE DOMESTICATED DOG OR ONE DOMESTICATED CAT PER APARTMENT, PROVIDED THE PET OWNER FOLLOWS THE REQUIREMENTS OF THE HOUSING AUTHORITY?S PET POLICY. However, because of an increase in biting incidents, beginning May 1st, NYCHA will be implementing a revised Pet Policy to better ensure that development grounds and buildings provide a safe environment for residents, visitors and guests. The revised policy includes a list of prohibited breeds of dogs and a change in the weight limit for full grown dogs from 40 pounds to 25 pounds. Dogs which have already been registered with NYCHA before the implementation of this revised policy, whether or not they are on the list of prohibited breeds or exceed the weight limit, are permitted. Click here and scroll down to the last page to read the actual policy The Daily News should have read the actual policy before putting this out to print. Also, they have listed breeds in the news story not on that list. It may be the weight restriction...but still

If you live in a housing project, you shouldn't be able to have a pet at all. Not for the sake of the residents, but the well-being of the animal. If an owner is too broke to provide for themselves, other creatures shouldn't have to suffer.

The NYC Housing Authority has prohibited pit bulls from all the housing projects it administers, and placed a new weight restriction on all pets, requiring them to weigh no more than 25 pounds. Previously, and according to the NYCHA website, the limit was 40 pounds. Here's a pdf outlining the new rules. 24 other breeds, including Rottweilers and Doberman Pinschers are also banned
Queens Councilman Peter Vallone praised the ban, telling the Daily News, "Finally someone is realizing that these potentially dangerous animals have no place in a confined urban space." Pit bulls, Dobermans, Rottweilers banned from public housing BY Oren Yaniv and Lisa L. Colangelo DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITERS Wednesday, April 29th 2009, 4:00 AM Anthony Nieves, 37, calls his pit bull, Storm, 'my baby' and pans the New York City Housing Authority's rule banning large and menacing dog breeds. Pit bulls are now Public Enemy No.1 at city housing projects. Starting Friday, the powerful popular breed that's sometimes trained to be violent is banned from all apartments run by the city Housing Authority. "Finally someone is realizing that these potentially dangerous animals have no place in a confined urban space," said City Councilman Peter Vallone (D-Queens), who has unsuccessfully lobbied state legislators to ban the dogs. The Housing Authority regulations also bar residents from owning any dog over 25 pounds. The current policy allows dogs that weigh up to 40 pounds. In addition, owning Rottweilers and Doberman pinschers also is banned under the new rules. Housing Authority residents who already have the breeds will be able to keep them as long as they register by Friday. City housing officials said residents urged them to ban the dogs that they claim are too vicious and threatening. But dog lovers who have pit bulls and the other targeted pooches are upset. "He's my baby," Jose Hernandez, 32, who lives in the Lillian Wald Houses on the lower East Side, said of his 6-year-old pit bull, Chopper. "These are not bad dogs." "It all depends on how you teach a dog," said Anthony Nieves, 37, as he walked his 1-year-old pit bull, Storm, near his home at the Wald Houses. "My dog is like a puppy," Nieves said. The ASPCA and other groups opposed to the ban have been working with the city housing agency to ease some of the restrictions. "We are opposed to breed-specific bans," said Michelle Villagomez, ASPCA senior manager of advocacy and campaigns. "And we find the weight restriction is too oppressive. So many breeds are over 25 pounds. You can get an overweight beagle that weighs more than 25 pounds." lcolangelo@nydailynews.com Read more: http://www.nydailynews.com/ny_local/2 ... hous.html#ixzz0EDlEinKb&B
