Charon, so you want to put a cost on Public Safety..it should be the NUMBER 1 concern of the Mayor. Citizens need to be protected. If you want Jersey City to flourish and have revenue streams from businesses and visitors then safety must be provided. With all the goddamn abatement that Healy and his administration pockets the money from is a place to start on where to pay for more policing. Crime must be fought and fought at no expense. No expense should be spared when it comes to public safety.

The biggest problem is that Mayor Healy has yet to seriously address the crime issue we have in Jersey City, yet he will go out and state crime is down.
Healy totally neglects parts of Jersey City. Healy promised 4 years ago promised to make Jersey City safe, he has not kept his promise and is making the same promise again, he is a joke when it comes to crime.
I'm sure the criminals want Healy to win so they can continue to prey on the citizens of Jersey City.

In my opinion we have enough police. Have any of you guys driven by any of the police precents during the daytime & seen all of the marked police cars there doing nothing. If they would have more cars driving around with 1 officer in there, that would make it look better in the city for them to spot something going on instead of 2 officers hanging out with the windows closed & the heat or the air going on in there.
Also they way you could look at it is that we could use more officers with all the cars parked outside the precents.
Where are all these cops I heard that were put onto the walking beat a few years ago when Healys son got put on in the south district, o wait, was he walking a beat or driving one of the nice cars with the air conditioner blasting! Now isnt he a firefighter.

We need to do in Jersey City like we did in Iraq...we need a SURGE..By that I mean a surge of police another 500-1,000. Police every block, double and triple up on the higher crime zones...hell the Jersey Journal mapped out all the high crime areas. Criminals in Jersey City need to be put on notice, that criminal activities will not be tolerated in Jersey City.. Let's drive the criminals, gangs and drug dealers out of out city. I don't want to hear shit about we can't afford to hire more police...Public Safety must be the number one issue on the Mayor's and our elected official's agenda, otherwise they are fit to serve the citizens.

A Jersey City man acquitted of felony murder charges last October was shot dead at the Booker T. Washington public housing complex early Saturday morning, officials said.

The 1 a.m. slaying of Jalil Spears, 22, a resident of the Montgomery Gardens housing complex, could be related to some of the previous homicides the city has seen so far this year, said Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio.

"We have had nine homicides in Jersey City this year so far, eight of them involved handguns," DeFazio said. "There is some degree of interrelation between a number of these homicides and there seems to be an overlap in the cast of characters that are involved."

Spears died on Fremont Street from a gunshot wound to the head, DeFazio said. A lone gunman fired at least six shots at Spears from a semi-automatic pistol and two shots hit a parked car, he said. No arrests have been made and detectives are investigating, he said.

Spears was acquitted by a jury on Oct. 9. on charges of felony murder in the death of Antwon Hill, 19, of Jersey City, who was fatally shot during a robbery attempt on Oct. 20, 2007, near the Montgomery Shopping Plaza, DeFazio said. Hill had served time in prison for drug dealing.

DeFazio couldn't say if there was a connection between that trial and Saturday's shooting because the motive has not been established.

Spears was also arrested at 7:54 p.m. in February at Bergen and Bramhall avenues and charged with eluding police in a motor vehicle pursuit. They had tried to pull him over, when he allegedly leading police on a car chase onto the New Jersey Turnpike, officials said.

Saturday's killing comes on the heels of Tuesday's shooting death of 17-year-old Pedro Roman Jr. who was gunned down in broad daylight at Triangle Park in the city's Greenville section. This shooting came a month after three teens survived being shot in the park and a week-long eruption of gunfire in and near the park. DeFazio said many of the shootings were gang-related and had an element of revenge to them. "The Jersey City Police Department and Hudson County Prosecutors Office have a number of working theories on a number of these cases but we need proof," DeFazio said. "The public has to get invested in this problem and help us confront this problem and the deaths of these young men."
