Thousands of bags of heroin seized, six arrested

by Michaelangelo Conte/The Jersey Journal
Thursday December 18, 2008, 4:30 PM

About 3,750 bags of heroin were seized by county narcotics officers during a probe into drug dealing based at Jersey City's A. Harry Moore Public Housing Complex that led to the arrest of five city residents and a Bayonne man, officials said.

"We hope that this successful investigation will significantly disrupt the drug distribution network centered at the A. Harry Moore public hosing site, said Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio today of the busts made by his office with the help of Jersey City police.

The Jersey City residents arrested on various narcotics charges were Rashawn Lee Bruce, 33, and Latoya Monique McMurray, 25, both of Lexington Avenue, as well as David Irving Young, 53, of Fulton Avenue; Devin Jarreau Maxwell, 19, Monticello Avenue and Shaquettah Easterling, 18, of Second Street, officials said. Also arrested was Vincent Key, 41, of Avenue C in Bayonne; DeFazio said.

The investigation began in October when police got information suggesting Bruce was distributing large amounts of heroin on the city's west side and the operation was based at the Duncan Avenue housing complex, DeFazio said. Bruce was arrested Tuesday after a brief chase and that led to execution of a search warrants at his residence, DeFazio said.

Inside Bruce's home, narco cops found 75 "bricks" of heroin, each containing 50 individual baggies of the drug ready for street sale at a cost of about $10 each, DeFazio said. Bruce was charged with six separate drug counts and resisting arrest, DeFazio said. His bail was set at $200,000 cash only, officials said.

Key's bail was set at $150,000 cash only, McMurray's at $125,000 cash or bond, Maxwell's and Easterling's at $75,000 cash or bond, and Young's at $50,000.00 cash or bond, DeFazio said.

The most serious offenses filed carry possible maximum prison sentences of up to 10 years, DeFazio said, adding that several of defendants could face up to 20 years if convicted due to their extensive criminal records.
