Authorities nab 13 reputed gang members, drug dealers
by Mark Angeles/The Star-Ledger Thursday November 20, 2008, 1:19 PM More than a dozen reputed gang members were arrested and a significant amount of cash, drugs and weapons seized during a series of raids early today throughout northern New Jersey. Brothers Joel and Sadiel Gonzalez of Elizabeth, both heroin dealers and members of the Bloods gang were the main targets of the investigation, a joint operation between the Union County Prosecutor's Office and the FBI's Safe Street Gang Task Force, said Prosecutor Theodore Romankow this afternoon at a press conference in Elizabeth. The long-term investigation dubbed "Operation Bloodline" traced an elaborate heroin distribution ring that primarily sold "brick" packages of the drugs to gang members in Elizabeth, Newark and Jersey City, Romankow said. It is estimated that the operation sold between one-half to one kilogram per week. A total of 13 people were arrested, including seven verified members of the Bloods and a member of the Latin Kings, said Romankow. Most were charged with 1st degree racketeering and 2nd degree conspiracy to distribute drugs. Bail ranges between $500,000 and $5 million for the suspects. The Gonzalez brothers would purchase the drugs wholesale, then transport the heroin to 13 Esther Street in Newark, a place they referred to as "the cave," where the drugs would be repackaged for street-level distribution, according to investigators. After repackaging and diluting the heroin with lactose, the brothers were able to reap between $42,500 to $78,500 per week in profit, said Romankow. "By taking these gang members and their poison off the streets, the dedicated officers and detectives who worked on this case have not only made neighborhoods safer, but also increased the quality of life for countless residents," said Romankow. Romankow was joined at the news conference by New Jersey Attorney General Anne Milgram, FBI Assistant Special Agent in Charge Aaron T. Ford, Jose Cordero, the statewide director of gangs, guns, and violent crime control strategies, Essex County Prosecutor Paula T. Dow and representatives from the Hudson County Prosecutor's Office and a variety of municipal police departments. The agencies that participated in the investigation were: the FBI, the Union County Prosecutor's Office, the Essex County Prosecutor's Office, the Hudson County Prosecutor's Office, the Newark Police Department, the NJ State Parole Board, the Elizabeth Police Department, Kenilworth Police Department, Linden Police Department, Roselle Park Police Department, Scotch Plains Police Department, Springfield Police Department, New Providence Police Department and the Union County Police Department.
