Thank goodness. That Newark branch employs the rudest, most self-absorbed people in Jersey City - and that's saying a LOT!

There is also a Chase branch on Washington Blvd in the base of one of the JP Morgan Chase office buildings over in Newport.

The Newark Ave WaMu branch was scheduled to be closed before Chase took over. I am hoping Chase will decide to extend the lease, because we use that branch all the time.

You're onto something, maybe Starbucks should have bought Wamu! Cash & Cappuccino! Checking & chai!

This place is also across the street from where I work, so location sure helps! My co-worker also told me that the coffee is cheap because it's subsidized by the bank. They're there just for presence and it's a not-for-profit cafe. Neat..."

Are you joking? Bank branches are killing urban retail. They drive up rents (because banks are willing to pay) and don't attract outside shoppers (because people bank locally). You can't window shop at a bank. You can't get a cup of coffee and people watch.

speaking of the old colony center, are there any plans to revamp or demolish that place anytime soon. it is such an eyesore

It's funny how life brings you in circles.

When I moved to Manhattan in the early 80's I opened accounts at Manufacturers Hanover, which was bought by Chemical, which then merged with Chase. When I moved here in 97 there were no Chase branches, so I went with PNC (Pretty Nearly Clueless) as the only Quicken affiliated bank downtown, switching to the new Wachovia when PNC lost their convenient parking lot. Last year I opened online accounts with Wamu, as they gave great rates, and Wachovia gave squat.

Now, apparently, I'm back with Chase. Weird.

Edit: Closing the Newark branch sucks for the Newark improvement plan. Banks are the bedrock of shopping districts. And having 2 branches on the waterfront and at the skanky Old Colony center doesn't replace it.

Good riddance!!

That branch stunk..literally. They also made no attempt to make that space presentable.

Now THAT'S the way a bailout should be handled, JPM-Chase got Wamu for a song, debt and all...no need for Paulson's trillion dollar meddling.

I am selfishly pleased because I have a bunch in WaMu CD's at 5% that was giving me agita because I'd rather not deal with the federal government to get my money back, not to mention doubt about accrued interest.

Closing that miserable looking branch on Newark Avenue will be a plus for the neighborhood. It's the UGLIEST facade for a bank branch in the Northeast. (I use Sixth Ave and West 4th St.)

Chase is opening a new branch in the base of 50 Columbus. My guess is that the WaMu branch on Barrow and Newark will probably not survive in the long term. However, since that is also a relatively new branch, it may stick around for the duration of the lease, especially since the Chase branch is still under construction.

Yeah, I know. I have WaMu. I'm just wondering if they're going to close down or turn into Chase.

Looks like Washington Mutual has become the lastest casualty of this financial mess. Anyone know the fate of the downtown JC branches? According to the NY Times, Chase is shutting down 10% of WaMu's branches (mostly in the New York & Chicago markets).

Are there any Chase branches downtown? I haven't noticed any, not that I've been looking. I know there's tons in the city.
