Last night it smelled more like low tide than sewage. I was at the marina earlier in the evening and it was indeed particularly stinky. Like cow manure though, I consider it a funk with a positive connotation.
Everybody needs a little funk. Quote:

Lincoln Park is having the same problem. Because of the winds I'm starting to think it might not be coming from Jersey City.

The stench is back. We had a few days off, but it has returned. I moved to this area in February and only started noticing a sewage smell last week. For those of you who have lived near the Paulus Hook or Liberty Harbor area for at least one year, is this a normal occurrence? It is nauseating to say the least.

That's just lovely.
The odor was back again last night. It hasn't rained much in the past few days. What are they doing?

Jersey City employs a combined sewer. Both storm water and sewage go to the treatment plant. During periods of heavy or prolonged rain, the plant cannot meet the demand and the combined effluent is drained directly into the Hudson river (and via the canal basin as well). You may have noticed "CSO OUTFALL PIPE" signs along the bank; that's where it comes out. The one in the canal basin has a strainer that retains large "particulate matter" thankfully.

I was coming back from Manhattan last night via the subway to the WTC PATH. I first noticed the stench in the subway around Chambers St. It was extremely potent down there. I was surprised to emerge from the PATH at Grove St to find the stench was also in the air over there. It was pretty nasty. Not sure where it came from.

I live in Harsimus Cove and have smelled what at first I thought was manure as we have a garden next door that is quite beautiful and thought they were laying out the same. However, I know from living here 25 years that there are many smells that emanate from sewer gas, burning rubble, the Hudson, NYC treatment plants, etc., so guess it remains a mystery for another night.
Get used to it if you live here though, unpleasant as it is!

For the past two nights the stench in our neighborhood in Paulus Hook (Washington between Sussex and Morris) has been disgusting. Anyone else notice it/know what the problem is?
