The wedge-shaped block between Barrow and Bright and Grand is not in the VVP historic district (mainly because it's primaily filled with crap and not anything historic). So developers are free to use whatever design they want on that block.
Considering the city council designated that area an "area in need of redevelopment", rezoned it, and made it eligible for tax abatements, I would expect more buildings like the one going up to replace the ramshackle garages on that street in the next few years.

Rabbit, obviously not that aspect of the neighborhood. Barrow from Bright up to Wayne has some beautiful rowhouses.
Speaking of those ramshackle garages...what ARE those things? They're terrible.

the historic nature of Barrow and Bright was blighted homes and ramshackle garages. i dont think a developer wanted to replicate that .

I wonder if the new building will fit in with the historic character of the neighborhood. The newish building on Barrow and Bright does NOT.

12 new market rate units on that block in a four story building (same height as the rest of the block) is fantastic news.
The tide is starting to turn on all that is wrong with that block and the buildings on Wayne/Jersey. For all the complaining that has gone on with that block, the park and "those buildings", this should be very welcome news.

Ooops, I just noticed a mistake in my orginal post. The public hearing is on May 15 (not 14) at 6 p.m. at 30 Montgomery St, 14th Floor - for anyone who cares to attend and/or comment.
I didn't know that lot used to have a house. In the 5 years I've lived in the 'hood, it's been parking lot surrounded by a chain-link fence.

Does anyone know any more details about a new development on the northwest corner of Barrow and Wayne? I got a certified letter from the lawyers representing the developer about a public hearing on May 14. I guess by law, they have to notify everyone living in the vicinity about the development plans and any public hearing. It looks like they're seeking a number of variances from city zoning codes to build a 4-story building with a total of 12 residential units and 12 on-site parking spaces. The space currently is a parking lot.
Not sure how I feel living just doors away from what looks to be a major construction project and downtown doesn't need another "luxury" condo development. Then again, that particular block of Wayne Street is so disgusting that any move toward gentrification would be a welcome improvement. I'm wondering what other people in the neighborhood think about this development and all the variances they're seeking.
